TP--obviously, he is an extremely talented player. I watched him at a summer tourney his soph year. How good do you think he is and how well do you think he will do in college?

I saw him play on back-to-back nights last year during the state playoffs. The first night was against North Pitt and he was phenomenal. It was the first time I had seen him play and the two hour drive was worth it. Against a very talented North Pitt team he dominated and led his team to victory in a close game. I’m an older guy and I would compare him to Pistol Pete during his LSU years. He is a super ball handler, exceptionally quick in transition, has a quick release and is deadly from long range. Because of all the ice-storm cancellations during last year’s playoffs, Eastern Alamance found themselves in a bad situation having to play two nights in a row, while their opponent, West Columbus had the night off prior to the game at Minges. Curry came out smoking hot and immediately hit two three-pointers the first two times he touched the ball. He finished the half with 24 points. Early during the second half he aggravated a previous ankle injury. Prior to that he had kept his team in the lead. Without him West Columbus took the lead. While he was out of the game it appeared that he and the trainer were having a hard time getting the ankle wrapped. He would get up and trot and then they would try to readjust it. He came back in late in the game but it was too late. He may have scored one basket if any at all in the second half and his team lost by two points. What a shame. Bottom line: Curry was playing really well in the playoffs and might have carried his team into the Dean Dome for a real treat to the Carolina fans.
How good is he? Offensively he is awesome. I live in the NE part of the state and often go to Virginia to see the top teams play. I have seen Marquie Cooke, the top player in the always talent-rich Hampton Roads (Mourning, Iverson) area, play numerous times. He is a senior and recently signed with Virginia Tech. Curry’s offensive skills are substantially finer than Cooke’s. Cooke is stronger, plays better defense and is on a much more talented team. The top player in the area where I live is Catlin Pruitt of Manteo. Pruitt is a lot like Cooke and I think he would have national recognition if he played in the Hampton Roads area at a large school.
Bottom line: Although Cooke and Pruitt are scoring machines and excellent ball handlers and passers, neither compare to Curry offensively. Both are better on defense and both are stronger and thicker which is going to come in handy in college ball. My impression at the time I saw Curry was that he needs to put on some muscle and concentrate on defense, and that if he does he will be a super college star and then a super pro.
I hope to see Curry play again this year. His stats in his first two games are awesome. He is listed as 15 pounds heavier than he was listed last year, and his stats indicate he is getting more rebounds. I wonder how hard it will be to get into the games. His conference is in Chapel Hill’s backyard and he is a hot topic there.
Great post and thanls for the terrific info. Plesae p[ost often to keep us informed what's going on in the eastern part of the state

CFBall,
Drop me a line at perkinstommy@hotmail.com and I'll send you my snail mail address. The local papers are The Outer Banks Sentinel, the Coastland Times (Manteo) and the Daily Advance (Elizabeth City). You might want to write to their sports editors, or I can pass your cards on to them. Your group would be a good one for statewide sports writers to share info.
Seems like most of the internet-discussion-groups people I know are not into prep sports and the prep-sports people I know are not into discussion groups.

According to my own calculations, Curry now has 2740 career points, just 18 points shy of the record. Looks like the record will fall at Andrews on Tuesday night.

Looks like Curry is over the flu that kept him out of the Ravenscroft game. Here is his stat line in a losing cause against Cummings:
51 pts, 11 rebs, 5 TOs, 4 asts, 4 stls, 1 blk

Its a good thing that he's going to UNC next season. But, he's a one-man show and if you put a box and one on him, you can shut him down.

I saw him play last year in the state tournament at North Pitt. North Pitt had a really good team with lots of good athletes and had gone to the state finals the year before. They put a box on him and rotated a fresh defender on him all night. He ate them alive singlehandedly.
His numbers are up from last year. This is what I just came up with for per game averages:
Points 39.5
Rebounds 7.4
Assists 5.7
Steals 4.3
Awsome!
He is extremely exciting to watch and has some unique, original moves. I hope I get to see him play again, but if I do it will be in the playoffs. There were plenty of seats available at the North Pitt game, and I saw him play the next night at Minges (ECU) and there were LOTS of seats available. I saw the second round playoff game last year between Manteo and Kinston at Kinston and there were plenty of seats available. I can't understand it. Just tonight Pasquotank at Northeastern was standing room only in the largest gym in the conference.

Yes, he's a one man show. Like I wrote in another post, he reminds me of Pistol Pete more than anyone. Not quite the flash as Pete, but he knows that the ball should be in his hands and you can see the confidence in his eyes. His team, at least last year, did not have a lot of tallent or height. But they all played hard.

Tommy...
I've seen JamesOn compared to Shammond Williams and I know the guy has great form on his shot and can really fill it up from all over. That said, do you think that he will be able to be as effective in a college game that will limit his shots more?
I've seen a little of Quentin Thomas on various film clips and the kid has a lot of potential and really good size. Thomas will help at the point regardless. My question is can JamesOn cover the 2 position (defensively) on the Div 1 level in college??
I'm a little more interested in his shooting % at the time, because that is a little better gauge. He won't get all those shots in college at UNC.
Also, it seems to me the kid shoots a very high number of free throws for a guard. This would indicate that maybe he's a little better at attacking the basket than I thought. Whats your impression? Is he strictly a jump shooter in college or more?
Great thread dude!!!!!!!!!

I’ve only seen JamesOn play twice, both times in last year’s playoffs. I was very impressed, but I know he has his doubters. Let’s keep in mind that Michael Jordan was playing JV as a soph and that Curry was averaging 33 on the varsity as a soph and 25 as a freshman. Jordan did not have a lot of meat on him as a high schooler either, so I say that anyone who doubts Curry’s potential is cutting him short. As I have implied before, Curry’s potential is unlimited. His numbers have improved each year of his career. Surely he must know he will not be to UNC what he is to Eastern Alamance. His skills are outstanding, and yes I think he will excel at UNC. I had questioned his defense in an earlier post, but that is not to say he is a slacker. He is quick, athletic, and very intense. As far as attacking the basket, yes he does it in an exciting way. He can slash through defenders and go up for the easy dunk. From what I could see in the two times I saw him, a major part of his game is his extremely quick footwork and his quick release. By now he is used to teams putting their best defender on him, and he continues to light them up. He can get his shot off while being tightly defended and it goes in. And yes, a lot of them are from the perimeter.
I'm an Eastern Alamance grad. You can also keep up with him at our home town paper. www.mebaneenterprise.com He had 65 in his last game against Western.

Curry got a triple double and EA has trounced their last eight opponents. They are undefeated in conference play. I think they deserve to move into the top ten in the 2A poll next week.

Latest word out of Mebane is that there was a drug bust today at Eastern Alamance and Cummings. 42 students were arrested and one of the was Curry.
It's very true. Here is the article:

What a horrible shame. I hope he will be treated like Kobe, his constitutional rights respected, considered innocent until proven guilty and allowed to continue to play until he is found guilty.

If he was caught with anything on him he shouldnt be able to play.
What would that say about Roy William's character if he let JamesOn into UNC? That it is ok to be a drug dealer and still play at one of the most respected college basketball teams under one of the most respected coaches? It's amazing how you have the basketball world in your hands and you screw it up by selling drugs. He is a great basketball player but must be a true idiot to let something like that screw up his whole future. It says alot about his character. I had so much respect for this guy before that happended. Being the states all time scorer, getting into UNC to play basketball but it figures....i guess somebody this good was too good to be true

Until a Judge or Jury finds him guilty of a crime he is still innocent.
i imagine most D-1 schools will stay away from him either way.

Sad part about that is.......the way America is now...you're guilty til proven innocent. Colleges have to worry about their image......especially D1 schools. They would rather a kid go to a prep school or JC, to prove himself, then he transfer to them. I'd say......just go to a small collage and ball...get a degree....and live his life. He can prove himself either way...he doesn't have to go JC to prove he can change, he can enroll at a small college......and prove it to them while he's a redshirt. Same thing to me.
I just hope he learns from his mistake and makes a change. I hope he doesn't let this set back make him call it quits....like some other talented young men I've seen do when they got in trouble, and society made it seem like it was the end of the world......
