View Full Version : NW4A Conference Tourney...
After yesterday's drawing, AC Reynolds gets the first round bye. Here are the matchups for the NW4A Conference Tourney...
#1 AC Reynolds
BYE
#4 South Caldwell
#5 East Burke
#6 Watauga
#3 Freedom
#7 Alex. Central
#2 McDowell
________________________________
The quarterfinals start Monday at 7pm at the Higher seed. The semifinals are played Wednesday Night at 6:30 and 8 pm at McDowell. The finals will be played Friday Night, 6:30.
My initial thoughts on the brackets are that I wanna see a South Caldwell and Reynolds matchup on a neutral court. Reynolds won both matchups this year, by 3 at home and by less than 10 at South Caldwell. As much as I like Freedom, I don't wanna see them a third time. Perfect opportunity for Freedom to pull one off in the semis against McDowell. I'm not saying it will happen, but to beat Freedom 3 times in one season is a tough order.

My initial thoughts are DAMN....we are going to have to play South Caldwell AGAIN!!! They play so well against us for some reason, I personally had rather see Reynolds play Freedom a 3rd time as to play South a 3rd time. I know McDowell might would rather see South a 3rd time as to see Freedom a 3rd time, tough to be a rival 3 times in a year, but you are playing on your home court so I see McDowell taking out Freedom again, and with relative ease! I think had this tourney been played ANYWHERE but McDowell, AC Reynolds in my eyes, might could win their first Conference Tourney Title, because it would be tough for McDowell to beat us twice in a matter of a week. However, us having to beat South, a team that plays us really well, and then turning around and having to beat McDowell on their floor for the title, I don't see that happening. Of course ANYTHING is possible, but ACR will have to play some great ball, and who knows maybe McDowell playing 3 games this week will catch up to them! One last question, the last 3 tournaments have been at Freedom, East Burke, and McDowell. Now does that mean next year the tournament will be at Watauga, South Caldwell, Alexander Central, or AC Reynolds. I heard someone say it won't because of all the travel, but then I look at the baseball schedule and I see the conference tournament is where....WATAUGA! Now explain why that doesn't involve travel for the teams? If baseball can do it the why can't these other teams host the basketball tournament?

Hey Bigdan....I know this isn't the boys basketball thread, but I can't find the NW4A boys tournament pairings ANYWHERE, and no one ever post anything about them on the boys thread on here. Could you post them if you happen to know them. I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Negative, the Nw4A Conference Basketball Tournaments are held by McDowell, Freedom, and East Burke. The reason is because of the size of the gyms. This is the biggest stage for the conference and it would be too cramped to have it at Watauga, South Caldwell, and Alexander Central. And, you wanna have a big crowd to see the champions crowned. The Silver Dome at McDowell seats 8,000 full, and Freedom & East Burke's identical gyms seat around 3,000 full. Ive been the to tournaments at Watauga, South Caldwell, and Alexander Central and it was very cramped to say the least. At times talks was being conducted to move the tournaments to ASU (While hosted by Watauga), and to Shuford Gym (while hosted by SC and AC). Whereas you dont have that problem at the big 3 cause their gyms are big enough to host.
Negative, the Nw4A Conference Tournaments are held by McDowell, Freedom, and East Burke. These 3 schools are the central schools in the conference and because of travel, these schools get it. The Nw4A has had the tournament at Alexander Central and at Watauga before, but created so much of a panic that it was decided to put the tourneys in Marion, Morganton, & Icard because thse 3 schools have the largest gyms in the conference and of far travel times. So in reality, Freedom will get next year's tourney, then East Burke the year after, and McDowell the year after that.
thanks for the correction but the other sports still rotate, wont they?

The other sports are close to stopping also. Word has it that the softball tournament will be held at Alexander and after this year the baseball will be held at South Caldwell.

Not trying to cause a problem here, but ACR holds 3000 full, with the upper sections out on each side. I know this because we just held a Cheerleading Competition here yesterday, and had 27 teams from WNC, Tennessee, and South Carolina all come and with both sides full and based on the money taken in at the gates we had more than 3000 in attendence.

I just cant wait to see this tournamnet....I mean just look at the way the games are gonna fall, they should all be close, and thats the way a conference tournament shoud be cause at this point no records even matter any more and everyone gets one last chance to make their mark...what can I say, I'm just excited
So with all that being said, how do u guys think its gonna go?
I think the reason behind McDowell and the two Burke County schools having the tourney every year may be as much location rather than crowd size. I-40 cooridor is considered the centralized location for the conference.

Yep they are always held in those three places. My sophmore year was at McDowell, my junior year was at East Burke and last year was at Freedom. And this year it is at McDowell again. The location is the biggest factor in why they are only played in those three places. Because they are in the center of all the schools. It wouldn't be fair for the players if they had to travel for long distances for a couple of days in a row. The tournament being played in these places limits that.

I understand the location factor, but if that is the big thing, then why do they have the BASEBALL and other tournaments at the other schools? Do they not care about those athletes having to travel the long distances a couple days in a row? Baseball is traveling to Watauga this year for their tournament, and softball is at Alexander Central, or South Caldwell is that not a lot of travel for those athletes? All I am saying is if they are going to use the "travel" excuse for having the tournament at these 3 schools, then do it in ALL the sports and not just basketball, that would make their reasoning a lot more believible!
are there any predictions for the quarterfinal games tomorrow night? Here are my picks...
#2 McDowell vs #7 Alex. Central: McDowell is on a roll now winning 6 straight. Now that its tourney time, you'll see McDowell step it up a level. Let's see if Atkinson can continue her hot shooting? I'll pick McDowell 74-50
#3 Freedom vs #6 Watauga: I haven't heard anything new about Tara Tate's condition. IMO, I would be suprised if she plays this week. Their offense looked a lot better against McDowell, other players are stepping up trying to produce on offense, we'll see if that continues. For Watauga, they have nothing to lose, just go out there and play hard, and who knows? I'll pick Freedom, 55-42
#4 South Caldwell vs #5 East Burke: If there is a mild upset, it could be here. South Caldwell won the last matchup on a contraversal technical foul. For East Burke, they will need Helton to really produce. If she can score in the mid to high 20's they'll have a chance. I'll pick South Caldwell, 69-62

I am going to say no upsets in the opening round of the tournament. Obviously, McDowell wins, my pick 72-43. Freedom takes out the Pioneers 58-49. South Caldwell at home will get by East Burke 61-48, as they really want another shot at AC Reynolds after two close calls! Should be a fun semi-finals although I think McDowell will have the easier of the two games, assuming East Burke doesn't upset South Caldwell.

Actually it was a good game! too bad the wrong team won, but hey I didn't expect Duke to go undefeated in the ACC, I still think 13-3 will win the ACC.

Hey Everyone. Just a word on why locations are McDowell, Freedom, and East Burke. Those locations were picked not only for centralizing the tournament, but also weather reasons. Think about it, would you really want to drive up to Boone with the weather the way it has been up there this winter? Personally, I would like to see each school have the opportunity to host a tournament. Just think of what it would mean to the players to have the opportunity to play a conference tournament on their home floor.... WOW! I know I would have.
My predictions:
McDowell 78
Alexander 35
Freedom 70
Watauga 54
South 68
East 63
Good luck to all the teams.
Do you all think there are any surprise teams? Maybe not just in wins/ losses, but also how they played this season?

IF any, East Burke would be it. Im covering that game tonight for The News Herald and the Lady Cavs are very confident that they can win, even at the Dungeon. But if they do, it sets up a bad matchup with them and Reynolds.

Well, it's the ole Freedom/McDowell match-up and South Caldwell/AC Reynolds match-up just like every one predicted! So now that we have come to this, how do you think things will shake down? Here are my thoughts:
Freedom vs McDowell: I see McDowell taking it to Freedom and trying to send AC Reynolds a message knowing they are in the stands watching. Freedom, assuming Tate doesn't play, just doesn't have the fire power to keep up and McDowell will run away in the second half. Look for Anna Atkinson to continue her hot play of late as McDowell wins 68-49.
South Caldwell vs AC Reynolds: Well, it's been a dog fight for ACR each time these teams have played, and this should be no different. With EVERYONE in the stands against the Lady Rockets it will be a tough game, one where if they don't shoot well could go to the Lady Spartans. I look for ACR to pound it inside to Alexander and Rybacki, and if ACR can stay out of foul trouble the Lady Rockets will be victorious 62-55.

You bring up an interesting point...with Reynolds being the #1 seed, some of the neutral fans may pull for the lower seed. I would expect most if not all the McDowell fans will be hanging around to see who wins the nightcap. If South Caldwell stays close, it may be really vocal inside Titan Gym.
Oh, BTW I would assume Freedom/McDowell will be another huge crowd, where are the Reynolds and South Caldwell people gonna sit? :laugh1:

Wanna see predictions? Here we go...
In the first game, I think we will see something simular to last week. Freedom will be patient, even to the point of maybe playing 4 corners, just so they can keep the score close. They tried it against us last week but it didn't work. McDowell just needs to keep up the tempo and get a lot of their points in transition. Atkinson is playing her best ball of the season, I think that will continue until the very end. Barrier will once again need support from people like Scruggs to keep this game close. In the end, too much firepower from McDowell. I pick the Lady Titans to win, 71-56.
The Nightcap should be close once again...Reynolds has to take advantage of their post presence and pound it in on South Caldwell. It would think South will play some zone, so that means Reynolds must be hitting from outside. If there is one thing that I think South Caldwell should do, and that is put at least half court pressure on the guards of Reynolds. South has some good guards that play aggressive and cause some turnovers. They're gonna need it. The longer South Caldwell stays in the game, the more the crowd may come to their side. It should be an interesting game to watch. I'll pick Reynolds to win, but it's gonna be close...67-64

As a parent of one of the AC players, which in many ways has been interesting to see the competition in the conference, I have seen all of the teams play at least twice and from a personal viewpoint think that McDowell has the best overall chance to take the title even though they did not play their best ball Monday night. I kept waiting for the lid to blow off during the game against our girls who suffered all year from lack of guard play, so for the game to be under a 25 point spread was somewhat surpising to me.
I believe that though Freedom is tough, they are beatable by anyone in the league. AC Reynolds is terrific from the outside and should advance also but the Lady Titans should prevail overall.
The one thing that any player from any of the member schools can say is that they have played against the BEST womens teams all year long and can take the credentials that go along with that with them to play all levels of college ball and in life in general.
Great forum btw.

Don't know the final, but McDowell wins and AC Reynolds beats South Caldwell 55-48. Didn't get to see the games but looks like the Lady Spartans gave the Lady Rockets another dog fight. I wish South Caldwell, and Freedom all the luck in the playoffs, represent the NW4A well!

very competitive game for both South Caldwell and Reynolds. The ball handling of South scares you every time down court, but they find a way to get it to the basket. They also had many outside shots that just would not fall. It's obvious for Reynolds that they don't need to be running up and down the whole night. They are at their best in the half-court using their girls inside. Overall a fun game to watch. Katie Rybacki went down late in the 3rd period with that knee that is heavily braced. She did play some in the 4th period. Reynolds will need her at 100 percent friday night.
In the opener, McDowell came out on fire against Freedom outscoring them 26-9 in the first period. The rest of the game was about even with McDowell winning 85-63. Atkinson continues her hot play, 19 points and a lot of assiste. Along with Anna, Emily Lovik was torching the basket from downtown, she ended up with 22 points. I would bet both girls had 2 or 3 3's each in the first period. Aimee Kiser continues to improve in her play from game to game, she had 16 tonight. She was the most aggressive I have seen her on offense all season long. McDowell will need that badly as the state playoffs start next week.
Friday Night is going to be another good game between McDowell and Reynolds, the #1 seed for the sectionals are at stake. I will make a prediction later. Also, at 5pm, we will have a play-in game between Freedom and South Caldwell. The winner gets the #3 seed from our conference in the state sectionals, and the loser will get the #4 seed and will travel to Charlotte in the first round of the sectionals.

Another very exciting game to watch between these 2 teams. South's Heather Pritchard hit a 3 off a jumper at the half time buzzer to cut the Rocket lead to 2. Katie McGalliard had 16 for the Rockets, hit the 3 well. Alex Thompson had 11. Pritchard lead all scorers with 18 and handed out a lot of assists but unfortunately so many shots wouldnt fall including Woodie's 3's. Keep shooting Woodie!! Good game from both teams. Good luck to both teams Friday and in the post-season!

okay, anybody wanna take stab at predicting the Reynolds/McDowell Championship Game? Here is my call...
First off, I think we'll have another huge crowd for this game. The key for Reynolds, IMO is not to let McDowell to come out to a hot start like McDowell did against Freedom on Wednesday. Reynolds needs to establish an inside presence early. Get some easy baskets and crash the boards hard on the missed shots. Reynolds better also keep the tempo of the game at their level, which is down. They tried to play at South Caldwell's pace at times Wednesday night and had quite a few turnovers. They're also gonna need all players at 100 percent. Katie Rybacki had problems with her knee last night, they will need her at full speed.
For McDowell, it would be nice if they could come out and resume what they did against Freedom, but I don't think it will come that easy. McDowell needs to maintain a tough man-to-man defense all night long and don't allow Reynolds a good look from outside. Atkinson will once again play huge, she's a big game player. Lovik's abily to drive and hit the medium range jumper will help her get some open looks from behind the arc. Patrice Smith needs to continue her good play. She is good at driving inside and getting easy shots. Her motion looks kinda off balance, but she gets by the defender easier that many people would think. Akendra Brown and Aimee Kiser will have to crash on the boards and get 2nd chance points. McDowell also needs to get Aimee the ball in the half court offense and go right at Alexander, and try to get her in foul trouble again. The McDowell bench could end up being huge in this game. Bruington plays hard inside every time she's out there, Revis plays tough defense and can hit the open shot.
This has all the makings of being a very close game. I think being at home and play as good as they are right now, McDowell will prevail, 76-68
Anybody wanna make predictions on All-Tourney Team?
I think Atkinson, Lovik and Thompson are locks for all tourney. I think Pritchard, Barrier, Alexander and McGalliard are likely candidates for the two other spots.

I think you have hit the nail on the head with summary of what ACR needs to do, hit the boards HARD, get easy baskets INSIDE, and play to their tempo, and not let McDowell get off to a big first quarter. ACR does all this, and doesn't let the crowd rattle them, then they have a chance. NOW, saying all this and DOING all this is two totally different stories! I look for Atkinson to have a great game as ACR will have problems defending her, and I look for Lovik to have a good game as well. For ACR Alexander and Thompson have to score well tonight or the game will be over quickly, as I don't see Rybacki being full strength. Should be another great game with McDowell winning at home again 67-54. I hate to go against my team, and I do think they have the ability to win, but at McDowell it will be REALLY tough. I wish McDowell and all the NW4A teams the best in the playoffs, and I hope that one of us will be in Chapel Hill representing the West in the State Finals! Good Luck to all, and here's hoping all the girls stay healthy for the playoffs! One last thing, with this being the last official NW4A game of the year, I want to say I only hope next year is as exciting as this year, and to all the seniors from each team this year thank you for a great year and we hope you have a successful future!
McDowell prevails with a 68-60 victory tonight in the Tourney Championship Game. I don't have player stats with me, I'll post them later, but McDowell came out hot with a 20-9 first period run. The Lady Rockets tried to fight back, but McDowell kept them at 12 points going into halftime. In the 2nd half, Reynolds came out on a mission, and McDowell came out flat in all aspects. It quickly got shaved down to a 6 point lead. After a McDowell timeout, Emily Lovik hit probably the biggest shot of the game, a mid range jumper which broke the Reynolds run, and at the end of 3, McDowell actually stretched the lead by one point, to a 13 point lead going into the 4th. Reynolds tried one more run in the 4th, but McDowell held them off and came away with the victory. It was pretty much a full house at McDowell tonight, only a few upper level seats were open.
McDowell used their tough man-to-man defense to deny Reynolds an open look for outside. The pace also was to McDowell's liking for the most part. All of McDowell's points in the first period were short range shots or from the foul line. No 3 pointers were attempted by McDowell in the first period. With the win, McDowell get the #1 seed in the state sectionals, while Reynolds will get the #2 seed, they will have a home game Monday evening against Hopewell, game time will likely be around 7pm.
In the 3/4 play-in game, Freedom blew an 8 point lead in the 4th quarter to South Caldwell and ended up losing by 4, I think the final score was 62-58. South Caldwell gets the #3 seed in the sectionals and will host a home game Monday Night against Myers Park. Freedom will be the 4 seed and will travel to Butler monday night.
Asheville Paper has Lovik with 25 points, that's a season high for Emily. Atkinson has 17 and Kiser 13. Sydney Alexander had 21 for Reynolds.
Here is the All-tourney Team:
MVP: Anna Atkinson
ALL-Tourney Team:
Katie McGalliard
Emily Lovik
Patrice Smith
Katie Rybacki
Sydney Alexander
I would like to know the voting process for all-tourney. Sorry if I tick off any Reynolds fans, but Rybacki should not have been all-tourney. Aimee Kiser has played her best ball of the year this week and didn't get all tourney? It was cool to see Patrice Smith get all tourney because she plays hard and dosen't get the recognition that she should get, but I would have voted Kiser over her. Just my opinion...

I am sure I am going to get looked down upon for being a home town fan, but I think something has got to be said about South Caldwell winning third in the conference tonight.
Is there a player South has over 6'1? There is ZERO size on that team and they seem to win rebounding battles all the time. They throw lobs to girls that are half the size of the girls guarding them and score on it. They give people fits with the defense they play. I think it is a testment to Jeff Parham and his system that his girls will run through walls to win.
Another thing is look out for these girls next year. Prichard and Woodie are gone, but Hawkins (the girl who hit the big three vs Freedom tonight), Chruch, Hobbs, and several others return.
Just a view from the home town...
thanks folks for the championship reports and insight! :applause:
Good luck NW4A teams........from one who is looking forward to rejoining this great bball conference!

Everything is going good. They are about like the Heels, go down to Clemson and lose. Really, they have had a great year. Why don't you ride up to a sectional game next week? Send me PM with your number.

The funniest thing in this game was that South Caldwell shot only 30% from the floor all game and still managed to win. They put up enough bricks to supply the Masonry class at McDowell for a decade, But, they outscored Freedom 16-6 in the fourth to win it. They had two things they needed to do and they did it and that was to limit the shots of Leah Barrier and to deny Alisa Scruggs shots in the post.

Don't forget that next year the Lady Spartans could also have Haley Barrett back on the floor. If this happens and she is healthy SC will compete for a championship. If you never saw this girl play before her injury you don't know how good she can be. She was amazing. If she can come back at only 80% she will be a player of the year candidate and will give SC what they need to get to the top. Without her next year SC will be about the same as this year without their two top scorers and no help coming frome the jv's as they were awful. I don't know if there are any incoming freshman that will help at the varsity level but they need a little something to compete next year if Barrett can't play
