okay, lets look at the games that will be played monday night:

Providence @ Independence
Myers Park @ South Caldwell
Freedom @ Butler
Hopewell @ AC Reynolds

For those Charlotte people reading the boards, what are your views on the first round games? Which players should we be looking for to carry their team's offensive load? Thoughts, observations, Predictions from anyone...?

back in january when the lady rockets upset the lady titans in fairview I posted on this board that I believed that lose would help mcdowell become a better team and boy did they prove me right. They blew out the rockets in the rematch(by 15 ) and then last night when everything was on the line they easily won again.(by 9) This week will be a good one, reynolds should have no problem with hopewell, mcdowell beat them pretty easy in the christmas tourney at freedom. It should come down to another reynolds-mcdowell showdown. Good luck ladies.

my thoughts on the 1st round games:
Many of the charlotte teams are not at full strength right now...Some due to injuries, some due to discipline. However, as always, the cream always rises to the top, and that is where Vance, Garringer, South Meck, and Independence find themselves.

Providence @ Dub-C......Losing a player of Granberry's caliber would cripple any team, and WC has had their season derailed. Even so, they still have more than enough firepower to run past this team........WC 64 Providence 47

Myers Park @ South Caldwell....MP has recovered well from last year's graduations and has gotten hot at the right time. Strong inside, and improving at guard, this could be an interesting matchup, IF it were a regular season game. Playoff pressure changes everything. Gotta go with home court advantage. South Cald 53 MP 39

Freedom @ Butler......Game really hinges on the status of Tate. For Butler, when Willis is hot, so are they, if she doesnt score, Butler doesnt win
If Tate plays.......Freedom 50 Butler 38
If Tate is out........2 point game, toss a coin

Hopewell @ Reynolds.... Hopewell hit their stride in January, beating Vance, and taking our Lions to Overtime. But since then, have lost 2 starters because of ??? THe team is still good, but I dont see the team playing well in a hostile environment. Reynolds 64 Hopewell 55

you may wanna edit this section because I typed in WC and Independence in the wrong spots...Providence will be playing Indy on Monday, while WC gets the bye. Sorry on my part for posting it wrong...

That is a pretty bold statement on your part, Tony. I would love to see McDowell and Reynolds both in the regionals. If they were to make it that far, the NCHSAA would set it up to where they would meet in the regional final, but there are a lot of teams out there that may have a say in that...

These first round games should be interesting. I don't know much of anything about Providence or Independence, other than Indy has the tall girl that used to play at Myers Park (Owens). So, I don't know if I can make much of a prediction. Whoever wins, travels to Marion wednesday night to play McDowell. For the Lady Titans, if it is Independence, it will be interesting to see how the interior plays against Owens. Big girls have given McDowell problems this year.

Myers Park @ South Caldwell: Myers Park will be making the trip to Hudson to play in one of the loudest gyms in the west. The way the gym is laid out, the fans are almost on top of the court. I don't know how Myers Park will respond to the hostile environment, but it should be a good game between fairly equal seeds. South Caldwell has quite a few girls who can shoot the ball well, but their overall ballhandling skills is what kills them from time to time. MP might as well plan on playing an up and down type of game. Lots of 3's may be flying in the gym on Monday Night. Which teams shoots the better percentage will probably win.

Freedom @ Butler: I would like to call an upset here and go with Freedom, but there seems to be no team chemistry. The Lady Patriots are talented enough to beat Butler in Charlotte, but the way they have been playing lately, it's almost like they just wanna get the season over. Their best player, Tara Tate, will likely not play. The key to Freedom's success is how many open looks can Leah Barrier get. If she can get some open looks from behind the arc, she can easily put 25 on you. Butler would be well advised to play man-to-man the entire game. Freedom does have a size advantage over Butler. They sould try to exploit that, get the ball inside to Scruggs and draw some fouls and get to the line.

Hopewell @ AC Reynolds: This game will probably be the closest game of the evening. That would be hard to imagine with a #2 seed facing a #5 seed, but Reynolds is down a knotch right now, and is ripe for the upset. Reynolds lost a very tough game to McDowell last night, and to come back and play on Monday is going to be a true litmus test of how good Reynolds is. The Lady Rockets are also at less than 100 percent. One of their players is playing on a bad knee, but she's still out there playing as hard as possible. Hopewell is the type of team that loves to run and shoot. They have three different people that love to fire it up from outside. If they can keep the tempo up, it will be to their advantage. If Reynolds can keep it more half-court, they can pound it inside on Hopewell all night long.

bigdan, from what I remember, Owens was a guard on that Myers Park team wasn't she? Ranisha White was more the inside player I think. I could be wrong. Anyway, its not going to be an easy ride for the Lady Titans!

he's right, owens was the point guard for myer's park, white was inside big girl, and "red" anthony was the wing with attitude...

owen's handled the ball really well, and shot pretty well... she was a little hard to contain, but atkinson can go head to head with anyone, so it may be a different story... not sure if she is playing the 1 for indy, but she is their biggest scoring threat... i think mcdowell will match up fine with them...

owen's is good, but that probably won't be enough

South Caldwell over Myers Park tonight 71-49. The Lady Spartans came out of their shooting slump, and the Spartan crowd was the loudest and best ever! Good luck NW4A teams!

I'm glad South picked up the pace a little bit in the 2nd half, and yes, they hit some shots so it was all she wrote for Myers Park.

Where are the other SCORES?

AC Reynolds jumped out to a 16-0 lead early in the 1st and never were really challenged in this one against Hopewell as the Lady Rockets rolled to a 69-37 victory. With a 37-15 lead at half, the Lady Rockets played everyone and rested the starters a lot to get ready for the match-up at South Mecklenburg on Wednesday. Congrats to South Caldwell on your win!

Great job ACR! Now, go down there and whip up on South Meck. They will be very tall, probably like Owen. I hope Coach has scouted them.

ACR Coaches have been down to Charlotte to see South Meck, and yes from what I hear (I haven't seen them) they are like Owen. I think our girls will be ready for this, but it will not be easy down there. I think our tough schedule has prepared us for this type of game. It doesn't get much tougher than having to play on the road at Freedom, South Caldwell, and McDowell (Twice), not to mention playing #1 Asheville High twice, and #1 Thomasville. So going to South Meck will not be intimidating to our girls.

Just heard Freedom lost 79-65. Freedom fell behind 28-10 in the first and could never really recover despite cutting the lead to 9 at half. I gather Tara Tate didn't play, and it's ashame the Lady Patriots had to end the season not at full strength. Oh well, congrats on a great career to her and Leah Barrier as well, and good luck to them in college. Looks like McDowell, AC Reynolds and South Caldwell will have to carry the torch for the conference Wednesday, Good Luck to all three of them!

I'm glad to hear that the NW4A schools are whipping up on the Charlotte schools. I was a bit worried about the Reynolds game, but it sounds like they have recovered quite well. Not to say that our conference is not strong, but the Charlotte teams must be really weak, with the margin's of victory tonight.

I think the Charlotte teams are good, but I think our conference has prepared us for this time of year. Look at South Caldwell, they have had to play McDowell twice, AC Reynolds three times, and Freedom three times, that had to make them a better team. They were probably licking there chops to play someone outside of those three! And Reynolds having to play McDowell three times, twice in a week AT McDowell, heck our girls are just happy to get out of Marion! We don't care if we played at Cameron Indoor Stadium, as long as it wasn't in Marion. Playing these teams from Charlotte isn't near as hard, although they are good teams. The reason being, first the rivalry isn't there, so despite it being a playoff game the intensity isn't the same, second they don't know us as well and don't know all our shooters as well. ACR has several three point shooters, and anyone will shoot them and most teams outside the conference do not realize this, and will leave our girls open outside the arc like they did tonight. Once that happens, it opens up the inside and we feast on the inside. I doubt this happen Wednesday against a much taller South Meck, but you get my drift. ACR had 11 different girls score tonight and 6 different girls hit 3's. Good luck to McDowell, South Caldwell, and ACR all Wednesday, let's go 3-0, and all be playing again Friday!

Just a couple thoughts about the South Caldwell vs Myers Park game. I know everyone talks about how tough it is to play at South. I have even seen people on this board refer to the gym as the Dungeon.

Tonight the crowd was like nothing I have ever seen at South. Guys painted their bodies, the towels were waving, and the place was down right deafening at times. Congrats to the Lady Spartans and congrats to the fans and administration for showing school spirit. That honestly is something that has not been there in years past.

Also, Heather Prichard passed the 1000 point milestone at South tonight. To my knowlege, there are only 4 or 5 girls in the 25 year history of the school to do that. Alot of people on here don't remember the days when South's girls program won 1 or 2 games a year.

Congrats to Heather on her milestone, that truly is a great achievment. It's nice to see the support for the NW4A girls hoops in the playoffs. The support at ACR was also unlike it has been all year long. More students, and fans than we have had all year. The students really were into the game and led the cheers as well, it was great to see. They really were a help to our girls jumping out to a 16-0 lead in the first 4 minutes of the game.

You are right the dungeon was rocking tonight. I heard people talking of how it reminded them of the games with Hickory back in the mid 90's when those two schools were two of the best in the state. SC had some very good teams from about 1993 to 1999 and had many players go on to play college ball. I remember one graduating class, I think it was 98 that had 5 girls recieve scholarships to play basketball. Hopefully SC is headed back in that direction again. Good luck to all nw4a teams

Actually, I remember when SC used to win 1 or 2 games a year..:D If you think The Silver Dome or The Wild Bunch is loud, goto SC and witness games inside The Dungeon. The place is so loud I couldnt even hear the ringing in my ears.

I like the way the team unifies itself with the headbands. Its a cool gesture and it brings the team together.
