View Full Version : Where did my CD burner go??

I just burned a CD yesterday. Today the computer does not even find the drive. It says unable to detect on startup. I just noticed the other day that I started getting a message on startup (that I've never gotten before) that all my drives were automatically updated. I have 2 hard drives which are C and D, a system save E, and my CD-ROM, and my burner, which are F and G. Now all it recognizes is the CD-ROM. I have no idea what to do next. No matter what I do it won't recognize the burner. The light for the burner comes on on startup, but then goes away once the computer is booted. I can even open the drive door when the computer starts up, but once it is all the way booted up, it doesn't recognize the drive and the door won't open. I'm stumped. Any advice?
Try going to your bios and setting it back to the default settings and see what you get first...
If that doesn't work go to your device manager and see if you have any conflicts.

Can you tell me how to do those things? I don't know how to set the bios. In the device manager, the computer doesn't see the drive at all. And the burner didn't come with the computer, I installed it, but I've had it on there for 2 years now no problem. I don't see how setting the BIOS to the original settings would help. :(

Most CD drives use the PC's existing IDE channel, which means you shouldn't have to install any drivers. This also enforces what Sav is saying - if the BIOS sees it, then if there aren't any problems with your operating system, it should see it too.
If the BIOS doesn't see it, either something has changed, like the configuration, or the drive is shot.
Other folks can add to this, but Compaq BIOS is usually F10, Dell is usually F2 on new versions, IBM is F1. Other older BIOS can be accessed with the delete key. Once you figure out which it is (your PC should tell you when you power it on), look around and see if it detects both CD drives.

Ok, I got the damn thing to see the drives, I set the BIOS to default, but now when I try to drop a CD in the burner or ANYTHING in my CD-ROM drive, I get a "blue screen of death" that said an exception occurred in something about scsi. In other words, now neither drive will work. I tried removing them both, then when the computer rebooted it sees them again, but any sort of CD I try to put in either drive causes the damn computer to crash. What the hell am I doing wrong?
I guess I'm gonna have to take the damn thing to get it fixed, unless ya'll have got some more advice. Fucking computer.
yeah...here's the easiest way....The blue screen of death is always not very good...my best bet....start clean :D
FORMAT!

I have the same problem Surfer, kinda. My computer finds the drive and I can access and write to it using a program called DirectCD. But Adaptec Easy CD Creator says it don't exist. Two years, no problems. Bastards.
Oh...And I pretty much gave up on Adaptec and found another program that would work fine if I would pay the registration fee. :D

What is it? The program I mean?
I think I've had it with Adaptec. I need something that will work with a Hewlett Packard 4X Burner. I'm going to take Savio's advice and reformat it tomorrow night. Luckily I have a second hard drive I can move anything on C from that I need to before I format. Nero will NOT work. It crashed my computer every time, in fact I had to get the Adaptec because Nero wouldn't work.
Anyway, let me know soon if you can because if I don't find something else compatible with this burner, I'll have to reinstall this Adaptec crap. Son of a bitch.

Thanks to all - I reformatted my whole freaking hard drive and got all my damn programs loaded, then I downloaded some new CD burning software. Started burning a CD, then "poof" the damn thing stops and has an error and my computer is locked up. I reboot and NOW my freaking computer can't find my CDROM or my CD burner, and if I drop a CD in the drive before I boot up, I get a blue screen of death. That's it, I'm giving up on burning CD's for now.
BigMark, I'm not buying a new computer right now. Sorry.

Windows 98. It appears to be some sort of IRQ problem, as the blue screen of death I keep getting says something about SCSI and called from VCD at something or other or some kind of shit like that. I think there is some kind of file that a CD burning program uses that is causing some kind of conflict between the 2 drives. I got the computer to find the drives again by removing the PCI bus drive controller from the device manager and rebooting. Tonight I'm going to try just unhooking the CDROM and just use the burner to install software and see if I can get it to use any kind of CD burning program. I'll let you know how it goes. What a pain in the ass.

I fixed the *(^#^(*@^$ thing!!! :D :D :D Hip Hip Hooray!!! I just disconnected the CDROM drive. Now the burner does everything except play DVD's, and I never used the computer for that anyway, I just used my DVD player on my TV. Not sure what was causing the conflict since I never changed any settings, but it's fixed, Just burned 3 CD's in a row with some free software I downloaded. What a relief! :):)

Did you check to see if you had both CD drives set to be 'master'?

Yep - one was master, one was slave. I never switched any of the settings and they worked fine before, they just quit working right. Weird.
I was having problems with my CDR and what straighten my mess out after week of trying to get it straight was I changed my settings of the IDE channel. 1.Right click My Computer, click Properties.2.On the Hardware tab, click the devise manger button. 3.Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers Branch. 4. Right click the specific IDE Channel item for which you want to configre DMA settings(depend the CD-Rw is on Primary IDE Channel Or Secondary Ide Channel,If you are not sure, Please click Secondary IDE Channel first. If the problem still exists after all the steps are finished then try the primary IDE Channel, and click Properties.5On the Advance Setting Tab, Drop down the Trasfer Mode Box and select PIO Only.NOTE: There are Two Trasfer mode boxes in the dialog. Change both to PIO.6 click ok.7. Restart Insert CD and see if this want help
