Fun game.
This one has some great interactive maps:

This one is only good when you need a hellicopter:

I found it to be boring after the initial rush wore off, but at the same time, I can do fantasy drafts in sports games for days on end.
Yeah, I've not played a game like this in a long time, since Carmageddon II really, so it's fun for the time being. I've got other games in the queue and haven't really completed Rise of Nations to where I wanted it so it might/might not be a long-term play.

Not looking to hijack the thread - but I'm feelin ya here. Can't explain it but I can play that stupid Madden game for days.

I found my copy of Rise of Nations, I just need some blank CDs to burn some shit so I can make room to install it. I'm playing the hell out of World Series 2k3 right now, just waiting for the new baseball games to hit the shelves. Gonna be hard to decide between MVP, All-Star, and ESPN this year. I usually end up with several brands of the same sport, but the budget is kinda tight right now, so I'll be stuck having to make a decision. MVP is looking the best overall, but there's a couple little things that turn me off, like career stats aren't broken down by year, no hall of fame, etc., but there's a lot of new things that no other game has yet, like the ability to actually play all your AA and AAA games as well as your major league games. I kinda have a boycott against EA sports too, so it's going to be a hard choice. :)
I'm trying to keep away from the football games for that very reason. I've seen a good friend and groomsman spend his entire day before going out to gig at night, working on college recruiting for his football team. No way I can get into that. Maybe one day if I'm on disability, but then I'll lose a draft pick to somebody random in the simulation and be all pissed off but can't get up from it.
Meanwhile, I've gotten up to where you can unlock the rest of the city in VC from the "hurricane closings" and whatever. Which is cool. Which means I got to go steal a tank. The tank fucking rocks.

I hear that. I'm down to 243 megs as of today, which is unfortunate because I just got two new bootlegs in the mail. I've got a 160 gig I'm buying for $70 from a guy, which I'll swap in soon. But having no space because your HD is full of music sucks.

Great game ... but buy the magazine/users guide. It doesn't give away too much. Finish the game a quick as possible, it's a pretty in depth game and you'll be ready to quit playing about the same time you finish everything.
They don't have any cheats in the magazine, but they have lots of them online. I don't really like using them, but the last mission was hard as shit and I got sick of trying.

I found the last mission to be easier than the last mission in GTA III. My tips would be to do as many of the side-quest missions as possible first. Meaning, the taxi driver, paramedic, vigilante, firefighter, etc. Also, the sooner you get the attack helicopter, the better.
I love this series of games though. Nothing on PS2 comes close as far as depth goes. Can't wait for GTA San Andreas.
my son bought me the GTA III double pack for xbox so I'd have something to do while I recover from my back surgery (awesome kid), but the damn Vice City locks up randomly. None of my other xbox games do this. Sucks. The music really sets the mood though, that's a shitload of licensed music in one game. I'm just getting started on the game really, we just drove around and messed about for a couple hours, I didn't really want him to see the "seedier" side of it. You can actually drive a motorcycle into the friggen mall, we both almost fell off the couch from laughing so hard, but we couldn't get the bike to go up the escalator. Now that's he's gone back to his mom's, I can start shooting and running over people. :D
He's a sneaky little guy, I have the feeling he only got me this game so he could play it while he's here, since his mom won't let him play it. But she really couldn't say no to him buying it for me, LOL.

You've raised a fine boy.
Take the time to hunt down as many Hidden Packages as you can early in the game. The more you collect, the more handy weapons and items are stashed at your numerous hideouts, saving you the time and money of having to constantly restock and replenish elsewhere.

just use all of the cheats. The game is no fun unless you are killing everyone.
just saw the funniest damn thing, I was in the big Blazer type vehicle, and I hit a guy on a motorcycle and he landed on the roof, proceeded to stand up on top of my blazer, and walked off the rear and kept going. Tough SOB, I totaled his bike, LOL.
anyone know where I can dl the manual for gta?

lol... There are loads of those moments in the game. I started a new game and had gotten pretty far, proud as hell that I hadn't been "wasted" once. Then I got cocky and started hotdogging on a motorcycle. I totally wiped out at full speed on a curb or fire hydrant or something... I hurtled through the air, arms flailing, at least a full city block before plunging into the water beneath a nearby bridge. I laughed so hard it was worth losing my unblemished survival record.

There's a good PS2 one at vice-city.com I think. I've been using bits and pieces to get through stuff I should be able to know. But PC specific, I can't remember one.
Last weekend I got up to where I have the mansion now. Got four total hangouts and just bought the car dealer.
Wish I could do better on the crotch rockets. Firing over the handlebars is pretty fucking cool...if there were a police motorcycle the vigilante missions would be easy as hell. As it is they get really boring if you don't cheat and use the tank. Which is fun as hell, having five wanted stars and the police chopper's trying to take you down but everything just bounces off.
You know something that doesn't exist in this town? Pickup trucks. Best I know there are no pickups at all. No flatbeds, either.

Also try gamefaqs.com. they have a lot of cheats, walkthroughs and maps.
Just noticed that BJ Smith, the ex-football player on some of the radio stations is played by Lawrence Taylor. Pretty cool. Jenna Jameson is in the game too. :mushy:
Candy Suxxx?
I coulda sworn the Avery Carrington character was Burt Reynolds. True?

Luis Guzman
Dennis Hopper
Burt Reynolds
Robert Davi
Fairuza Balk
Lawrence Taylor
Jenna Jameson

Thought I had caught a couple names in there.
Shoulda had a couple more name voices on the radio. You can get Julie Brown (either one) for nothing nowadays.
I forget which one's Philip Michael Thomas but that's kinda funny.
This damn game keeps getting harder. Got to start using the flamethrower though, that's good stuff. You can torch the police chopper, too.

You meet him after kicking the Chef guy's ass and stealing his cellphone.
Lance.
I gotta start remembering where the usual ammo spots are, because I'm just now starting to get into the spots where you can start earning money daily, and I'm liberal with ammo. Plus, if I've gotta make rounds to collect money every day, I may as well be stocking up.
I hear that you can go into the rampages and just automatically fail out of them - walk away - and keep doing that to get more and more ammo. But I've passed a lot of them.

well there's a hidden rocekt launcher on the road to the airport. You'll see an orange looking building north from the intersection where you'd turn right to go to the auto shop. In the pool is a rocket launcher. There's also a flame thrower back by the shipping docks on the same island. I'm also pretty sure there's a weapon behind the house that has the R* shaped pool.
at the R* pool is another flamethrower.
There's a ball court in little Havana or Little Haiti that has grenades.
If you pick up money, it's not hard to add some ammo requisition to the trip.

I dont go to those places because I tend to get in trouble with the law due to the fact that the haitians want to fight me until i break out a chainsaw or something.
I haven't gotten the bridges opened yet, so I'm stuck on the first island. Damn thing locks up every 30 minutes or so, so I've been playing baseball mostly.

well, since GTA is the only game that does it, I can't really blame the 'box.

R* messed up a bunch of the double packs. Some people have lockups, some have no pedestrian voices, then a lockup. My game's music is much lower than the other sound, even when it's ful blast in the options. The ps2 sound wasn't that low.
They did a shotty job of porting it, but they did remove the major glitches that the ps2 had.
I dunno... my Vice City and even GTA3 played like a dream on my PS2. My XBox on the other hand, has glitches and screw-ups fairly frequently, usually with the sound. It's the curse of Windows, man!!

I saw the preview box at EB games last night. They have already sold thousands of preorders... the ONLY way you'll get an immediate copy of this game when it is released is to preorder now.

sweet!!!!!! Is the initial release for PS2 only?
Supposedly they're only offering it on PS2. Which would suck.

Allright, cool. Had heard that the whole thing was just PS2. Relief, even though I probably won't pursue a bootlegged PC copy for a year. Hell, I've got a couple games queued after this one to play, including my first complete stab at madden.

It might be a while for me. I hope they have a damn heavy metal station on the radio this time. Vice City's VROCK was a step in the right direction, but I'd like to see some musical affirmative action brought to the modern day as well.
Maybe.
but that just seems to be a personal preference, where the game's built more toward the theme. Maybe for San Andreas they'll do a bit more punk.
I guess a lot of it depends on what time period it's set in. Vice City obviously had the Miami Vice thing going on, the cut-scenes with music in the background reminded me so much of that show I've been looking for DVD box sets. :)
If I was president of Rockstar, I'd do one called Lone Star City. Have the city be a cross between Dallas and San Antonio with a dash of Houston. The storylines could include a corrupt-professional-sports thing, a fat-cat-J.R. Ewing-meets-Boss-Hogg crimelord thing, a Mexican gang thing, a redneck-militia thing, a Southern Televangelist thing, or any number of Texas-inspired action scenarios. There'd be a mandatory country station... two or three for this game actually... as well as Tejano, gangster rap, Dallas-style heavy metal, and two or three redneck-ass talk radio stations.
In any case, the new GTA is sure to deliver the goods. I for one can't wait.

If they ever had the technology to do it justice, a Vice City NYC would be badass. The subways, the boroughs, the Park, it'd be something fierce to put together the way they put together Miami (friend of mine who plays the game recently went there on business and says it's damned funny that it's laid out so close). The only regret to the Miami theme is that they didn't make an attempt to get into the keys, but I can't see much relevance and it would have to be a seaplane trip at best.
BTW, the Texas theme is pretty tight.

I think the first GTA III game is supposed to be sorta like NYC. It's Liberty City, but they play with the names like that a little. San Andreas is obviously L.A. and Vice City is Miami. I like the Texas idea also, I hope they continue with the city themes. I recently played True Crime: Streets of L.A. and the street layout was perfect, but the width of streets and landmarks was a little off. I'd like to see a little more accuracy, but the original content, like that of the GTA series actually makes it a little better. True Crime was more accurate, but less fun.

True Crime was different, not bad, but I ended up selling it back for cash before my big move. GTA's got the lock on the genre, in my opinion. The mix of action with the spoofy humor has earned them brand loyalty from me.

It's pretty much the same game engine. But it lacks things like motorcycles and helicopters. Too bad, too. But it was very fun on its own grounds. Maybe you should check out RedOctane or something similar. I rent before I buy and this service makes it much easier to rent. Also lets you try out older games without having to shell out too much cash for them.
it's getting good, the last few missions have been awesome. Shooting up the gang at that yellow house with the helicopter, etc. Now I'm on the one where I have to save Lance from Diaz's thugs at the junkyard.

I'm on PC.
I'm to the end of the standard missions and am now going to try to do the jumps/packages/build the property type missions. Done with the porn office, the car lot, the boatyard, etc, just have to do the bank robbery to finish the club; then I've gotta do piddling shit like the ice cream missions and the cab, pizza, vigilante, ambulance, fire things. But those are fun right now, as is taking the seaplane everywhere and destroying it in the middle of the road before I'm ready to start a new mission...leaves a pile of cars everywhere.
