Larry, I like the idea of this forum. And I like the discussions that occur here. BUT....I think Spirituality would be a better name since not all people are religious and I see more discussions opening up as a result. Just my $0.02 worth. Anyone?

Either-or is fine with me. The resulting discussions will pretty much fall under the same umbrella.
Spirituality is just a method of trying to understand life and its deeper implications, whereas religion is a recommended set of behaviors meant to help Man avoid self-destruction. One deals with the internal, the other, external.
"Spirituality" does seem a little more all-encompassing. But if it were to stay "Religion" it probably wouldn't make a huge difference. Most of us pretty much get the idea. But that's just me talking.

Really, the name doesn't matter. But I just want to know that we can discuss other things beyond the major religions. I'm not going to start a thread advocating the worship of NYC pigeons, but my beliefs tend to border more on spirituality than religion. Miss_tery is another. Anyhoo, glad to see others have opinions.
I'll get the name changed.
Larry, religion is a great name, in fact I can't see how you could call it anything else.

That's not a bad idea, Builder. Like you said, there are many who would call themselves 'spiritual', but not 'religious'. Still dealing with the supernatural and how it affects mankind, but the scope is wider.
i actually had the same thought this morning in the shower. yes, i think about tbr all the time.
i consider myself deeply spiritual, but i get an uncomfortable feeling when i'm at a church service on sunday mornings.
i don't really have any definition about my beliefs, and i'm ok with that. i've always thought that labels were limiting. like, if you say you are catholic, that you can't EVER beleive anything that the baptists think. i don't like assuming that i'm right -- especially when there's a good chance i'm not.
anyway, back to the topic.
my thought process went like this:
"spirituality" could put off the mainstream christians, of which there are many here. "religion" is a fairly inclusive term, but even i feel like an outsider because i don't worship in a church on sundays.
so, i came up with: "religion and spirituality". (i personally liked "the philosophy of religion" but that can be a great thread.) the combination of the two seems to fit well.

I think of it as what you consider the force that drives the world.

Is not hiring an interior decorator the same as shopping at rooms to go and buying a package?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but to me the only difference between the two is that religion is dictated from the top down, and spirituality is an individual's interpretation of the netherworld.

Good observation. I wouldn't disagree with that.
