View Full Version : MVP Baseball 2004
Wow, this game is incredible. All major league teams plus their AAA and AA counterparts. You control all 3 teams of a given franchise in dynasty mode, you have to worry about team chemistry, calling guys up, everything. The gameplay is rock solid, for the first time, it seems like you're in total control of everything instead of just the computer making decisions based on stats. Even a .200 hitter can crush mistake pitches, and mistake pitches happen. The pitching is based on the tiger woods style meter, and if you miss the bar, you might serve up a big fat hanger. It's not just selecting a pitch, location and pushing a button. Throws from the fielders are the same way, you can hold the meter down longer and force a harder throw, but based on the fielder, you might pull the 1st baseman off the bag or whatever. There's a little red area at the end of the bar, and it's smaller depending on someone's arm accuracy. The farther in the red, the bigger chance of an error.
Only a few issues, the rosters were finalized on Jan. 15th, so you'll have to do quite a bit of work to get them up to date, such as the Maddox signing, the Arod trade, various other things.
I really didn't think the minor leagues would add that much, but wow, it's hard to see how we ever lived without it. It adds so much depth. You can play ever single game for all 3 teams, manage any of them, or sim any of them. It's all up to you. You have certain goals to meet to please your owner, both 3 year goals and 1 year goals. The 3 year goals determine your fate, you might be an extension if you meet one of the 3 year goals in year 1 or 2, or you will get fired if you don't meet any of them after 3 years. The 1 year goals determine your payroll and manager rating, which helps with team chemistry and other intangibles. For example, you might be tasked with having a sub 4.10-ERA in AAA ball, for the team, or a team slugging % of .480, or all kinds of other goals. If you meet a goal, your budget is increased.
Damn this game is awesome, even better than WSB 2k3, which was the holy grail of baseball video games up until now. If you're a fan of baseball and have a ps2 or xbox, I'd suggest at least a rental. It's available for PC, but due to the batting interface, only a handful of controllers are supported, and they ARE required. The batting is purely analog, you have to move the left stick to where the pitch is going to make contact.

you know it's wordy when I give up on it
I feel like I should ask for pointers - not on the game, on the rumination. Does this come with a Tom Emanski training tape for the players?

this is my new obsession. the gameplay is by far the best ever. very life-like. the minor league teams is what takes it over the top. buy it now.
ps.......if you do not see me online for awhile, do not worry.
Sounds like a good game (I had MVP 2003 for the PC and it was great but I doubt my 700 Mhz machine can handle the new version) but I'll probably go with ESPN baseball when it comes out because of the XBOX live option.
Maybe next year EA and Microsoft will work out their Online server issues and make EA titles XBOX live compliant.
Anyone else gonna try ESPN Baseball? The football game is pretty solid so hopefully the baseball can hang.

(gamertag = kandp dad)I played WSB 2k3 (which is last year's version of ESPN) right up until the day I got MVP. MVP took a little getting used to, but ESPN will have to improve a LOT of things from last year to beat it. Of course, the xbox live option will be a major plus. If I could afford it, I'd definitely get it just to play online. On the other hand, if you're a stat-head/franchise mode fan, I don't see how anything can beat MVP at this point. The gameplay is nearly perfect except for a rare scoring error (sometimes a legit double over the shortstop's or 2nd baseman's head will get scored as an error), and the franchise mode is the deepest of any sports game I've ever played, even madden 2004. The manager's goals plus the minor leagues really push it over the top.
I've basically boycotted EA Sports for not supporting xbox live, but once I tried MVP in the store, I just had to have it. It's really incredible. Nothing's perfect, but MVP just does so many things right, that I can overlook a few nit-picks here and there. Most of my nit-picks would be interface related, such as no sorting by position when doing call-ups/send-downs, etc. One other thing that I don't like, but can live with, is the fact that career stats aren't broken down by year. You only get career totals, and current year stats for each player.

it's out now, 2004 is this year's version, just came out on March 9th. Not sure why they called it 2004 instead of 2005, because all their other games are a year ahead on the titles.

Wall i just Order MVP Baseball™ 2004 I hope it good for pcyou have to have a certain type of controller, I hope you checked EA Sports website. There's only like 10 or 12 different controllers that the game recognizes. One with 2 analog sticks like xbox or ps2 is required because the right stick controls slides and fielder dives, and the left one controls pitching location and where you swing the bat.
Found a list of supported controllers:
MVP Baseball 2004 recommends the Logitech Dual Action controller. This controller will give access to all the gameplay features. MVP Baseball 2004 also supports play via keyboard and the following dual-analog stick gamepad controllers, all of which have suggested default control profiles available in the game:
Dual USB Feedback Joypad
Gravis Eliminator AfterShock
Logitech Dual Action USB
Logitech Dual Action
Logitech WingMan Cordless
Logitech WingMan RumblePad
Saitek P880
The Logitech controller is very nice, here's a link. http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=11,CONTENTID=6951

The gameplay is nearly perfect except for a rare scoring error (sometimes a legit double over the shortstop's or 2nd baseman's head will get scored as an error
i've had on 2 occasions the announcers claim an error on a play that is clearly NOT (diving attempt in CF and ball went off glove, and diving attempt in the IF and the throw was late). however, there was no E scored, just a minor malfunction on the audio with the announcers saying there was.
yeah, and sometimes if you get forced out at 3rd or home and the batter is safe, they'll call it an infield hit, but it's scored correctly as a fielder's choice.
I've ran into what you're talking about too, the announcers saying the wrong thing is no big deal, but getting charged an error, or robbed of a legit hit pisses me off. I turned the various error sliders way down to make up for it, since I'm getting errors I don't deserve, maybe it'll balance out long-term that way.
I'm getting ready to start a new dynasty since I just found a good roster download for the xbox, I just can't decide what team I want. I want a team with average talent, and not a loaded team. Average major league team with some good prospects in the minors, and a cool stadium. Any ideas?

i'm playin the pirates right now. they have some pretty decent young pitching, but other than that, there isn't anything special. i just like PNC Park.
check out the royals (kaufman stadium is one of my favorites) or the A's. they always have good talent in the minors. i would say the twins, but the metrodome for 81 games a year would suck.

they are current as of 1/15 of this year. most notable free agents are pudge, maddux and mondesi. a-rod is still a ranger. i've corrected most of the bigger names, and it wasn't too time consuming.

Kip Wells is 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA. I tend to leave starters in too long and get myself in trouble sometimes. PNC Park is awesome, especially when you hit one well enough to see the river. :)
Just started a KC dynasty. You're right, Kauffman stadium is beautiful, and Berroa and Beltran are two young emerging stars. So far, KC has been the most fun, and I've tried several teams. Just lost Juan Gonzalez for 14 days to a hip flexor after banging into the wall to catch a deep fly, but I can live without him, I find it's hard to hit with him due to the way he waggles his fricken bat around. :D
i'm playing w/ the brewers right now. is there anyway you can speed up the simulation?

none that i've found, it takes a while to sim a full season. I guess because of the sheer number of games since the minors are involved.

it's a little thing that comes with a usb connector and a port to stick a memory card in. You plug the USB end into your PC, stick the card in the other end, and transfer downloaded save files to the memory card. You can then take the memory card to the xbox and load whatever is on it. Try best buy or one of the mall video game places.

quick question, do the players actually progress during the course of the franchise mode. Seemed like in last year's game they didn't.

they don't progress during the year, but they do after spring training. So in year 2, after spring training, you get a screen with all the players and how much they progressed.

I'm on PS2, and I'm in the top of the eighth right now and a five run lead. Unfortunately, Uribe just took a cut off throw and he won't do anything. The game is stuck and has been for ten minutes. Dammit, I thought only the X-Box was supposed to freeze like this. Oh well.
I thought I had updated my rosters for the dynasty, but I only did it for the exhibition play. Is it too late to control other team's rosters so I can do the whole Maddux, A-Rod, Lopez, etc.....??

after you update the rosters, start a dynasty and make sure you select "default rosters: off" on the page that comes up where you pick the difficulty, if you want to fantasy draft, etc. You can't control other teams' rosters in dynasty mode, so you have to go to roster management, load the rosters you want to use or make any moves you want, then start a dynasty. It always uses default rosters unless you tell it no when you start each dynasty.

I've been thinking about picking this one up, but the EA-M$ thing pisses me off so badly. I already have 3 EA games (NCAA Football 04, MM04 & FIFA 04) and I always quit playing them because I cant play anyone online. I get really bored playing 1 player.
One question about dynasty mode - do the other franchises ever offer trades? Is there a franchise creation mode? Also, how easy would it be for me to assemble my fantasy league team as a new franchise and sim their season?

yes, they do offer trades. they will outright offer a trade, and other times they will simply notify you that they are putting a certain player on the trading block and are interested talking to you about him. there are also trades between computer franchises as well.
not sure what you mean by franchise creation mode.
you can run a fantasy draft in dynasty mode, so that could be done no problem. you can run the draft with MLB only, MLB + AAA, or even all 3, MLB +AAA + AA players.

MLBPA. players assocciation is the reason. unless a player has been on a a major league roster at least 1 game in his career, he can't be used. there are updates coming now, or might even already be available that will have full rosters for all teams.
as far as the missing major leaguers other than bonds, they were replacement players during the strike season years back and aren't a part of the MLBPA.
bonds is an easy fix. his properties are already there under the name john dowd for the giants. have to change name, color, #, b/t hand, and some minors like his bat and elbow guard.

It's kinda funny that John Dowd was the guy that ratted Pete Rose out for gambling. And now Bonds is in the middle of the Balco mess. But, it's not a dig at Bonds because one of the programmers names is John Dowd and they usually use their own names for fictional stuff. All the coaches in ESPN baseball last year were named after the developers.
When I edited Bonds for my franchise, I changed his name to Balco Bonds.

No, how did you get the unlimited points?Get a good team and simulate an entire season, accomplishing as many goals as possible. Save the season and profile at seasons end but before going to the playoffs. Then exit and reload the season to recieve the same number of MVP points again. Save your profile exit and reload again and again to recieve the points at seasons end everytime.

yes. make sure to turn off injuries, trades, rainouts, anything that slows down simulation. it only took about 15 mins for a whole season with it turned off. you'll have to hit an ok at the all-star break, so don't come back 30 mins later expecting to be ready to go. oh yeah, you can only accumulate up to 50,000 pts at a time. you'll then have to go buy players, stadiums or jerseys before you can add more. make sure to save your profile when you buy.

yeah, that gets old real quick. there are sliders to fine tune certain parts of the game under gameplay options. i have found, that when i went up to all-star, they started missing more balls when they dive. probably close to 50/50 on catch/miss. one would think they would get better, go figure.
