What's the difference? Do you have faith that your version of the way you should be living your life is the right way? Or do you hope that what you're doing is right?
Like many in the military and like my friends in law enforcement, I live my life with what I call good-natured cynicism, or jaded optimism. Basically it's the idea that in life you're going to run into all kinds of B.S., and trouble can and will jump up out of nowhere at any given time. But you know what? That's OK. It's a wild ride, and you should enjoy it and savor it every step of the way.
As far as ideas like faith and hope, for me that's a mindset that works kind of like Dumbo's Magic Feather. If you face life with confidence that everything will be all right no matter what, that's how things will turn out. Just like if you hang your head and wait for the next catastrophe to ruin everything, that's likely to happen too. Your perception shapes your reality.

Good question. I consider hope to be a feeling of good, thinking positive and looking ahead. Faith, to me is the safety in knowing that God has the ultimate plan and that everything happens for a reason unbeknownst to us at this time and someday we will understand it. I know I sin, but I still have faith in God and that he has me in his sight at all times.
Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Excellent question. Faith is just a synonym for trust. I have hope for the future because of the trust I have in God.
Do you have faith that your version of the way you should be living your life is the right way? Or do you hope that what you're doing is right?
A little of both. It's not so much that I have faith in the way I'm living, because my beliefs don't start with me. My trust is placed in the one who's teaching me how to live. And so far, the more I incorporate His teachings into my life, the better my life becomes. I suppose you could say that the improvement in the quality of my life I've experienced so far increases both my faith (trust) and hope for things to come.
As I understand it:
hope in the biblical sense is an eager, confident, expectation.
Faith is the substance that brings the spiritual reality into physical reality.

hope - To wish for something with expectation of its fulfillment.
faith - Confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing.

so what happens if you are confident and living life and boom* Catastrophe happens? What if you never in your wildest dreams perceived a tragedy to happen but it still does? what then?
You don't have faith in faith, that's idolatry, you have faith in God's Word!

I think you can have faith in faith, but not your own faith, but the faith of God which we receive through hearing God's word. For example, when we hear the gospel we are given a measure of faith to believe, the choice is ours if we do or not, then by placing our faith in the work that Jesus did on the cross we receive forgiveness of sins. Then when asked if you are going to heaven you can have faith that your faith (which was given to you)in the atoning work of Jesus on the cross has paid the price for your sins.

Then you cowboy up.
If the catastrophe is partially your own doing, you learn from the mistake and grow in wisdom, adapting so you don't repeat the mistake in the future. You try to make amends with anyone who was wrongfully hurt by you, then you press on.
If the catastrophe was nothing you could have forseen, you assess the damage, map out how you plan to recover, and set out to repair and replace what needs repairing and replacing, if possible.
Hey Ecilam, what branch of the military are you in? I have a son-in-law who is in the army and is stationed in Iraq right now. Have you been deployed? Are you scheduled to be?

I'm an Air Force Staff Sergeant. I'm currently stationed in the UK. I have not yet been sent to the desert, but have friends who have. Whether or not I'm going remains to be seen.
