anybody familiar with this stuff?
how do you know what version xbox you have?
i don't want to solder anything. there's one by x-bit for like $60 that's solderless and seems to be feature rich, but i really don't know what "features" i need!
get a chip that you can disable if you want to play online. xbox bans the user and the box for life if you are using mod chips.

I don't know about illegal, but they definately void your warranty.

Much like head shops, these things aren't technically illegal until you do something illegal with them. In the case of modchips, this would be reflashing them with another BIOS. As far as I know, it's legal to purchase them and even install them. It's when you reflash them to play pirated games that can get you in trouble. As for voiding your warranty, simply peeling back the sticker at the bottom of the xbox will make M$ refuse to even look at it.
