View Full Version : I'm going on a freaking DIET!!

OK, I am turning into a blimp. I just got home from the beach, and this morning I am up to 220 lbs. That's only 5 pounds less than I have ever been and I'm not going to size 38 pants. These dang 36's are getting too damn tight. So starting today, I am cutting out soft drinks again (unless they're diet) and switching to water and cutting out my daily order of french fries at lunch. I usually drink a half gallon of Coke or Pepsi a day. I am also debating trying Hydroxycut. I exercise fairly regularly, but lately I have been slacking off on the weightlifting since I injured my shoulder and back. I've been doing cardio for about 45 minutes a day 4-5 days a week, but I can feel my muscles getting soft again. I need to get back into the weights on a limited basis.

Everybody says "Oh, you're tall, 220 pounds isn't much for someone 6"5" Bullshit. My doctor said my optimum weight is between 187-196. So I'm shooting for 200.

Any other tips? Cutting down on drinking beer is NOT an option. I usually drink on Thursday and Saturday nights.

My goal is to get down to 200 by the end of July. Is that unrealistic?

cut out softdrinks and fries and you are good to go.

Me too Silver. Those pictures from the lake were the last straw. I actually used to inspire fear in people who looked at me, not mirth. I think I have found my salvation though. Those red wine vinegrette subs from SubWay kick ass and I can eat subs 5 days a week. 12 grams of fat for a foot long sub aint too shabby. Considering my normal lunch is probably 40 grams of fat that is probably a good starting point. Now if only it didnt take me 14 beers to feel a buzz.....

Hope not. My I noticed 36's are getting tight after coming back from Tybee this weekend.

When my knee went out, I gained some weight from not being as active as I was. But now I'm working out more, but the weight ain't coming off.

I know it's the beer and how much I eat, but I was always able to keep around 215 just with exersize. But it doesn't come off with just exersize, and the bitch is that I get hungry after exersize. And beer is good.

I'm going to have to bite the bullet. I'll start with no more Dr. Peppers.

I've been trying to be better, too, and I wish I had the problem of weighing 215. I gotta drop 20 to be there.

Well, if Sly and Silver can do it - so can I (drink more beer I mean).

Lets have a weigh-in and then make some bets.:)
I don't like diets but I like to bet.

Well, I've got to drop 10 to get there. I'm 225.

Really, it's this damn office. Once this knee gets all the way better, I'd like to get back to playing ball and tennis and such. But this office keeps me tied to this computer.

Hmmmm. How 'bout a weigh in at Larry's tonight? Since I can lose 5 pounds in one "sitting," I think this is one bet I can win. We should have math come up with some formula though instead of just going on total pounds lost or sly and I would have an unfair advantage.

cut down on the carbs...especailly at dinner. you know the atkins thing right? You don't need to be that drastic but just remember that if your body is burning fat for energy..it won't store fat. Stay away fom all foods the get turned into fat easily...all sugars, white breads, some fruits, potatoes. There is something called the GCI which is an index which measures how easily foods get turned into fat.

The latest studies are showing that intense interval training is much more effective at burning fat than the standard 45 minute cardio workout. I've been doing it for a couple of weeks and it seems to work.. What you want to do is max out your heart rate for one minute...then rest (60% max heart rate) for two minutes...then back up to you max for minute and so on. What this will do is number one burn more calories and two increase your metabolism. Doing one 30 minute interval workout can raise your metabolism for the next 48 hours. I've noticed a substantail increase in my metabolism. The gliders and excercise bikes don't work well for this (at least not for me)..you need to run or do the stairmaster/step mill.

at different cardio zones (% of max heart rate) your body gets its energy from different sources (carbs, fat, muscle glycogen, and muscle). You max the fat source by doing high intensity intervals.

The latest issue of Muscle Media has some good detail of interval training in it....so does Muscle Fitness

you can have your 14 beers per day and still lose yoyr weight....you just need to realize that those 14 beers have roughly 5 grams of carbs each...so there you have 60....you can have about 20 more for a day...choose wisely.

Another thing with alcohal...if it is in your blood, your body will burn it for energy over fat....

that's a scam. have you heard of the sports nutrition company EAS? You've probably seen some NFL players with EAS hats and shirts...anyways, it is a marketing scam to get you to buy EAS products. Just get on a good workout program and watch what you eat.

WOW. That was a lot of fast responses.

Seriously, I think the weigh in thing is a good idea, as long as everybody can list what they weigh and be honest. I figure 2-3 lbs a week is a good safe weight loss for me. Right now I am at 220. I say everybody list their weight, and then list it again next Monday and every Monday. We should have some sort of prize for the winner, like all their beer bought at the next party. And it would go by percentage, so people who weigh more wouldn't automatically win. That way if I lose 20 lbs, which would be about 9 percent of my total body weight now, somebody would have to get better than 9 percent wight loss to win. They did it her at work back in September, everybody put in 50 bucks and they got up a $500.00 pot for the winner. That would be cool. Anyway, like it or not, I'm getting down to 200. And it's my gut, that's fat, not my ass. My ass is doing just fine. ;) How about an end of July final weigh in?

Diets bug the shit out of me! I tried one for a week once and I was more unhappy not eating the foods I like than I ever was when I was a tubby-tubby 220. I haven't lost much weight, but I have moved it to more desirable places, I am down to 210 now.
I'd actually like to build back to 220, but with no more fat than I have now.
I'll never get rid of this spare tire (small one), and I am comfortable with that. I am not willing to run even a mile a day, eat shit I can't swallow or starve myself. All I ever do is limit myself to 1 soda-pop a day, eat smaller portions (although I end up having to eat what the wife and boy don't...HEY, I hate wasting good food), and lift at least three times a week. Now that summer is hear, I'll ride my bike 5-10 miles a few times a week, too.
Silver, you still need to eat the things you like, just cut back on your portions and hit the gym as much as you can. If your doing cardio consistently you should be able to at least avoid gaining more weight. To loose weight, try cutting back on your portions before you change what you eat and becoming unhappily skinny.

Or try the Alley McBeal throat tickler diet?

I finally broke the 176 barrier I never could seem to get by. I'm at 174 now. Just 4 till I reach my goal. Then, a lot of crunches and running and crap like that I hate to do.
