It's publically available today.

If you're machine can run it, get it. First of all, it's the best looking game ever. Not necessarily color and stuff, but detail, lights, shadows, that kind of thing. It's amazing.

Plus, it's the goddamn scariest thing I've ever seen or played.

I did the same :)

I am going to go pick it up. It's evil man. It's not a "run through and shoot everything that moves" type game. It's a "move really slowly, shine your flashlight in every corner, and wear and adult diaper" type game.

I got the call from EB this morning--I'm heading down to the mall at 1:30 to get it.

I have a pretty decent graphics card. What kind of hardware do you need to run this game?

Well actually it's pretty scalable, so if your system meets the minimum requirements, you should be ok. I don't know what those are though, might want to check doom3.com

Best game ever made. Swear to god. I'm blown away. The realism is stupid. I was impressed by Far Cry, but the textures and light and shadows and the people FOR GODS SAKE look real. And I was so into it that when my fiancee got home from work and tapped me on the shoulder (i had the headphones on), I screamed like a little bitch. It's fuckin awesome.

I'd be surprised if they can make it half the game it is now on PC on the xbox.

If yall are playing this without surround sound, you really are cheating yourselves out of a good portion of the game. The guys beating on the walls asking for help are so real. Sometimes you can hear people trapped in rubble tapping on pipes. Other times you can hear someone behind you, you turn around, don't see anything, start going back the way you were heading, then get bushwacked from the direction the sound came. Unfreakinbeleivable.

Not sure what's freaked me out more yet; that scene or the one where you find William Murphy's PDA in the middle of the pentagram. That satan laugh made my sack hair stand up on end.

yeah hefty requirements. my audio is skippy and just messed up in general. 9800 pro and 1.7Ghz processor means that i get "medium quality" by default. man. what system do you need to the high quality setting?

Toll Booth Willie
08-04-04, 10:15 PM
I got a 9800 pro and put it on the ultra high setting. It gave me some warning about needing 500 MB of memory for textures, but I got a gig so I fired it up. Only problem I see so far is during "transitions"; i.e., when I open a door, seems like it freezes up for a sec. I may jack it back down to high later on. Anybody try multiplayer yet? I tried and it never connected.

yeah, that's 512 of TEXTURE memory -- ie a 512Mb graphics card. they put that in probably for screen shot purposes and for when those cards eventually come out. the freezes you get are when textures get cached back and forth to the card.

It is freaky. Voice whispering "help me" or "it took my baby"... that maniacal laugh.

I can play for about and hour then I gotta go do something else :)

Superfluous_Nut

i went with the DVD torrent version (not an official version, just everything put into one install). it took overnight, but no biggy.

the install jacks up on it, tho (it asks for cd #2). you end up just having to copy the files (doom3.exe and base/*) and go from there. no registry crap. no dll's. no big deal there.

Superfluous_Nut
08-05-04, 12:25 AM
the audio glitch is killing me, tho. i read that doom 3's audio is all in software which means i don't think it's a driver thing or sound card thing. it stutters and repeats and then skips -- namely when people are talking. real drag. anybody else experience anything like this?

edit:

oh yeah, and are lightbulbs unheardof on mars or something? christ.

Don't laugh--the scene I'm talking about was actually pretty freaky (and doesn't involve scatology at all, unless you count the fact that you might wet yourself at that scene in the game).

the game reviews all bemoan the no co-op aspect but say the bright side is that it is in xbox. the xbox version is actually not a port, apparently, but a concurrent development. weird. guess it's pointless to try to port it since the gamme pretty much is the graphics engine which the xbox is not capable of dealing with.

i remember playing the original doom series co-op. it was great.

i'm a bit surprised by the collision detection in this game, as well. lots of places where you just get hung up on corners and stuff that don't make much sense. or climbing up a ladder and not being able to full climb it till you wiggle left and right.
