I went up to Chapel Hill yesterday and watched them play a looooonng intra squad game.

Here is what I noticed about the '04's:

Josh Horton-- a charasmatic ss..he is already becoming a leader of the team. He can play..he can hit...and he can lead.

Reid Fronk--good gosh! He is already the best hitter on the team. Hit two shots to the fence and then proceeded to bang a HR...he is amazin'.

Chad Flack-- There is no doubt that Chad will hit college pitching. In fact, Chad will do even better in college because initially, pitchers won't pitch around him. They will challenge him until they realize it's a big mistake.
I believe Chad will enjoy the challenges of college ball vs the frustration in HS when he was lucky to see one fastball a week.

Kyle Shelton-- Kyle continues to show his athleticism, strong arm and quick feet at ss, 2nd and third. It will be fun to watch him battle and push Mangum and Horton.

Tyler Trice-- Tyler looked great!!! Although he said he felt a little rusty, he had movement on his FB and command of his CB. He was nearly unhittable in the 3 innings he pitched

Mike Franchinei(sp)--- Mudcat is right. This West Henderson grad can bring some heat, but was most impressive was his CB...it's major league. Hard and late breaking.

All the freshman had their moments yesterday. Seth Williams, Andrew Carreker, etc., etc.

I look for the Tar Heels to be rich in pitching, great defensively and need to play small ball....until the younger guys find their power.

Providence studs Coach H sent off and garnered them scholarships this past season?

Update on the Providence guys (from what little I've heard).

Talked to the Clemson coach this fall (late October) ... he said that Alex Martin had a great fall and they are very excited to have him.

Haven't heard much from Kevin Dietrich at Pfeiffer (but Pfeiffer has a new coach and never updates their web site) Maybe someone has heard from him or his family lately??

Chris Ahearn is up at Western Carolina. Heard he had a nice fall ... maybe rcbbfan can get us an update on him.

John Ahearn was trying to walk on at South Carolina and made the first cuts, but he didn't make it to the final fall roster. USC is possibly the 2nd toughest school in the nation to try and walk-on at (Arizona State would be worse -- they bring in 40+ guys every fall).

Kyle Whigham is on the roster at UNC-Pembroke listed as a C/1B.

Matt Foulk had reported as signing for UNC-P but I didn't see him on the roster, he may be on the development squad or have decided to pursue his education elsewhere.

Bobby Northrup went to Mount Olive but they haven't updated their web site since early summer.

Matt Barker is on the 2005 roster for the Savannah College of Art and Design (NAIA school) as a RHP/IF.

He was a very very good HS pitcher with ALOT more potential! He should be pitching somewhere in college YET he has his priorities STRAIGHT for sure with his education! Great young man and team player!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NC State is where he wanted to go......baseball or not. He certainly could pitch at the next level but as "O" said...he has his priorities straight.

the same goes for Jones and Little what competitors and TEAMMM players!! Utmost admiration and respect to them for they TOO could and should be playin at the next level! Yet once again THEY know baseball will not be played forever! Greatest of students to say the least not "just" baseball players! Wishing them the best as they deserve and will be rewarded :xyzthumbs !

Last I had heard Joey had made it thru all the cuts after "walking on" at NC State. He did pursue education over baseball but he is a darn good pitcher. A great testament to Tommy Little's "original" Matthews Mudcats - most of the entire team are scholarship baseball players, and many at D1 schools. And the ones that aren't playing baseball have selected their educational choices over baseball. They ALL had a chance to play somewhere. WOW! It was a great team loaded with talent and great kids to boot.

Mamaslam--could you please list the players on the Mudcats and where they are now. I believe it would be very impressive.

Ben Buchanan, UNC-Asheville
Joey Cutler, NC State University
Kevin Dietrich, Pfeiffer University
Reid Fronk, UNC-Chapel Hill
Bobby Northrup, Mt. Olive College
JJ Rollins, Appalachian State
Logan Smith, UNC-Greensboro
Sean Snell, UNC-Greensboro
Kyle Whigham, UNC-Pembroke

not playing,
Blake (Bulldog) Gehringer, Western Carolina
Ryan Jones, UNC-Wilmington
Greg Little, Duke University
AJ Mason, Univ of Florida
Nick Miller, Clemson University

Coached by:
Tommy Little
Brick Smith
Tom Fronk

Not only talented in baseball, every one of these young men are attending college! A very smart group, to say the least! I guess they DID listen to Brick about how important school was! One very wise man there. Seriously, they had superior role models in their years together which molded these kids into fine adults. Such an important attribute that sometimes gets lost in the win/loss melee. Funny how when attitude is above the opponents, so is the quality of play.

Having the opportunity to work with most of them they are ALL accomplished baseball players/athletes not to mention some pretty darn good "students" for the most part!

Didn't I hear that Charlotte Christian pitcher Michael Najanka had signed with Winthrop? They don't have their 2005 roster on their website yet, but he's not listed in their 2005 signees that include about 6 or 7 pitchers.

We think Michael Najaka signed with Winthrop also. Their list of signees only included the early signees as far as I can tell. Michael signed in the spring. Coach Hudak has posted the fall 2004 practice schedule, the 2005 game schedule but not the 2005 roster. Michael is a top-notch pitcher - we will be hearing more of him in the future, I am sure.
