View Full Version : Scrimmages?
There's a HUGE multi team scrimmage scheduled for Sat. Nov 13th at Freedom High School. The following teams are expected to scrimmage that day...
Freedom (host)
Asheville (2 time 3A champs)
High Point Central
Salisbury (2A champs)
West Charlotte
South Caldwell
Not sure which teams are gonna play who and at what time but that looks like a full day of action with some really good teams scheduled to appear. Please post any other scrimmages planned for the next few weeks as we get ready to start the season...
Do you know what time they are starting? And maybe when S. Caldwell, and Freedom will have games?
Thanks!
Watauga at Forbush on Nov 15
Watauga hosts West Caldwell Nov16th

not sure who or what time each team will play. I'll look into that and update everyone on the schedule for that day.
I would assume that they'll start early part of the day (noon?) with this scrimmage being that it is on a Saturday.

I hope someone will give us a complete rundown of how the scrimmage goes, especially the NW4A teams, and Asheville, on Nov. 13th as I will be unable to make it down there. I would love to see this even though my team isn't going to be there, but my mothers cheerleading team will be competing in Raleigh at the NCHSAA State competition so I am going to support her and the Rocket Cheerleaders! Thanks and look forward to hearing from you...
McDowell has two scrimmages coming up...
Nov 13 @ North Buncombe
Nov 20 Avery County

Since the McDowell scrimmage dosen't start until mid afternoon, I'll try to make it down to Freedom and watch at least everybody play once.

AC Reynolds scrimmaged tonight easily handling East Henderson, even without Brianna Worley who rumor has it will be out at least 3 more weeks with an injury to the leg (stress fracture?? not sure). The Lady Rockets looked good at times and sloppy at times, however their running game was there ALL the time. Defensively they were fairly sharp, and offensively they got A LOT of open looks with their offense nailing several three's and scoring easily inside with offensive rebounds and nice passes to the post on offense. All in all not a real test tonight, and really couldn't tell much. The young girls played well, as there are at least 3 Sophomores that will see major minutes. The returning players picked up where they left off, and did basically what was expected of them, and ACR handled a weaker opponent. Tuesday will be a major test as ACR travels TO Asheville to face what I am sure is the #1 ranked 3A team in the state. Without Worley, it will be extremely tough to hang in there, but a great experience for the young girls and a chance to see exactly where we stand right now.

yes indeed, starting the season playing @ Asheville is a true test of how good the Lady Rockets are going to be this season. There's something about Asheville that I wanna see and that is their backcourt...nobody can match Asheville down low but I get a feeling that the guards for Asheville could be a soft spot on the Lady Cougars. Get a team like Reynolds who loves to run up and down the court and you never know what might happen. I wished McDowell had a shot at Asheville this season, I think a rally fast tempo with good guard play could give Asheville problems this season. Good luck in your opener next week.
Anyone make it out to the EB/TCR scrimmage? Thoughts?

I agree with you about Asheville, however I have a feeling if they get in trouble, they will hand it to McCants to bring the ball up. I saw them do that a couple of times last year. Without Worley in the lineup for a couple more weeks I don't see us really challenging Asheville, although if we have a good shooting night, you never know! We will run up and down the floor just like last year, that was obvious in the scrimmage, and our defense looked good. Worley just adds depth, scoring, and most importantly rebounding to our front line this year, which we will need especially against Asheville. She has bulked up and isn't the thin/frail looking gal from years past. You will see a different girl from years past when she gets out there. I think she will help a lot to offset the loss of Sydney Alexander when she comes back healthy, which should be early Dec. or late Nov.
Busy day for me running the streets checking out different scrimmages...here's a recap of what I have seen today.
First off this morning, went to Freedom and watched a less talented Freedom beat Hight Point Central by four points. Personally I don't put much stock into the fact that Freedom beat HPC but I think it shows the difference between mountain basketball and that ball being played in the Central and Eastern part of North Carolina. Fundamentals means everything, especially if you don't have the most talent on a team. Freedom is gonna be a tough team to face in the NW4A, their problem is they likely don't have the talent to beat the upper tier teams in the 4A classification. This is also my first time getting to see Mr. Kenny Carter in action. It took me about 5 minutes to form my opinion of the man. The talent level in the Triad must be a bit low right now because HPC usually gets the big time players. They're a good team, and got talent, but in 3A I just don't think they'll be able to beat Asheville. I also watched Patterson School, a private school from Caldwell County, absolutely destroy Salisbury by 40 points. This scrimmage for Salisbury is good because it's better teams than they will ever play in 2A, and should make them better in the long run.
I left Morganton about 11:45 and heading back toward Marion and then went to the McDowell/North Buncombe scrimmage. There were a couple things that I got out of this scrimmage. First, looks like Laeesha Corpening has fully recovered from her knee injury. I think she was one reason why we ran out of gas against Fayetteville 71st last year. Second, we look much stronger in the post compared to last season. I had heard word that Leah Smith and Aimee Kiser had both improved over the summer, that seems to be the case. Both girls really aggerssive inside. Ladiesbballfan is gonna like this, we may see a bit more 2 post offense from McDowell this year. And finally, teams usually take a few games before they start getting into a grove shooting the ball. McDowell's trio of Atkinson, Lovik and Brown came out hot today, take that for what much it may be worth.
You must have seen a different Freedom team that I saw. Freedom was outplayed by Salisbury. They seemed to show no hustle whatsoever. Freedom played for a half and then South Caldwell played for a half. SC looked much better than Freedom. Freedom had one player that was not afraid to shoot. She put up several shots. I give Freedom credit though. They look alot better against Asheville. Their intensity was back up and they seemed energized.
What has Halie Barrett done to her leg? She had a boot on one of her legs. Will she be back in time for conference?
Also, did anyone get to see the EB scrimmages? They had one vs. TCR on Thursday and one Saturday vs. St. Stephens/Latin. Let's hear what they have. Alexander and Watauga both have a scrimmage on Monday.
Hoops season is here.

Well, when you get teams playing more than one scrimmage per day, you can get some different results. As I said earlier, Salisbury looked not ready to play when they played Patterson School, while Freedom was moving the ball around quite well against HPC. BTW, from what I heard the original scrimmage schedule ended up being rearranged because West Charlotte no showed. When I was leaving Freedom, I saw the South Caldwell girls bus pulling in. I hate to hear about Barrett, that girl just has had absolutely no luck at all.
The scrimmage between Alexander and Ashe County turned out to be a sloppy game with very little scoring. If you take the 4 quarter scores, then Alexander won 29-20 but it was not pretty. The offenses for both teams struggled but the bright spot for ACHS was Kenya Miller who is playing the 2 position instead of the 1 from last year. She is able to get more of her outside shots and unofficially had 16 with at least 4 3-pointers. The inside game struggled but I think they entire team will step it up for Wilkes Central. That is always a physical game and the 3 starting seniors are ready to get to the Eagles.
