View Full Version : Sorry to Report, Our honeygirl is very ill...

I just got a call from New Zealand.

Ingrid is very ill. She was rushed back to the hospital yesterday and had to have an emergency 4 hour surgery. She has septicemia (what some call blood poisoning). She is in ICU receiving antibiotics. They are saying at least a week there.

I'm so very scared for her.

how worried should we be, fred & plu?

I have nothing but solid faith she is going to be fine. I'm worried I guess because
1. She's like a sister to me and
2. The medicine in NZ is much different than here.
3. The people I talked with are scared and I think it's been a hairy 24 hours with them and her.
She's lost a lot of blood and she has some serious infection. They have diseases there that we have been virtually free from for years. I'm as scared as I have been in a while, but I still have solid faith that she will be here in the spring. I just wish I could hold the old gal's hand. :(

The only thing that worries me is that her immune system has taken a beating and it all started about a year and a half ago when she had her tonsils out.

Was the emergency surgery because of the blood poisoning or the blood poisoning was caused by the surgery? I'm afraid I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to medical stuff.

I know Honeygirl is tough as nails. I really do believe she will be ok.

If you talk to her please tell her she is in our thoughts and prayers. She knows how much she is loved here.

Two separate problems from what I understand.

She became septic and had some complications from her surgery which sent her to emergency surgery.

Ok all...

I'm getting no answers. I am armed with the NZ phone book, the hospital lists and if all else fails, her mum and dads number.

I really hate to call them, but I will! They are extremely kind people.
For instance, when her dad called for her at my house- he was apologizing the moment I answered for even ringing, for making me push the button, for making me use my air to talk to him, for making me get up and get the phone.

Ok not that bad but just a pure white soul, the goodness just oozed through the phone and I'm happy to call them, it's just- I don't know, ya know?

Thank you Lord for hearing our prayers.

Ingrid has improved today  . Her tempurature spiked over night and they were getting ready to intubate her (airway tube). I guess our little kiwi thought she better try and help them out, so she suddenly improved.

Apparently she has not been alert, almost in a coma like state. Later today she was becoming more alert and her fever is coming down. There are high hopes of her recovering more and more every day now. She had some horrible cultures come back but it looks like her body is fighting.

I made sure that she would get the word of how much we are sending our love and prayers to her and that she would probably have at least a 6 month exemption on being hateful so she should use it to her full capacity.

If there is any change for the worse, someone will call, otherwise I'll call on Saturday.

Just got a call from New Zealand!!!

It was Ingrid! I couldn't believe it when I heard her voice. She sounds weak but was able to call.
She has had to have 4 units of blood and her blood count is still very low and she has two drains in yet, so she can't come home until Wednesday or so.

She wanted me to express her thanks for the wonderful people here praying for her and sending her good vibes, she says she can feel them.
She doesn't have a phone in her room so she was able to walk to the hall, that's good news. Just letting everyone know....

OH
MY
GOD

I love all of you – so very much. I’ve got to say, that without doubt, this has been the scariest time of my life. As many of you know, I had a couple of surgeries planned for this year. The first was relatively straight forward and I was up and racing in no time. The second was more complex and serious, but I was confident that I would get through it like this one. I returned from hospital, weak, sore, wobbly – but none of that was unexpected. I had a massive wound, but it was well dressed and ready to potter about as I had planned. Within 24 hours though, the whole thing had just turned to crap really. I was unable to hold down food, I was becoming delirious, my wound was weeping, bleeding and had become very infected. I had a very distinct smell that I won’t go into, but basically, I was rotting. I could hardly walk, and when I went back to my surgeon, I was admitted to hospital immediately. As weird as this sounds, I actually didn’t think it was that serious. I got put into my own room in the highly infectious ward and hooked up to all sorts of machines. I was awake and thinking “I’ll be out by morning” until my partner David (who works in the Hospital) started looking more and more worried every time he came to see me, and then the Doctors’ started. Nothing was touching this infection, my blood count was dropping, my white cells were going through the roof and I was the colour of the sheets. I was taken back to theatre the next morning and they re-opened the wound. Basically, I had a massive haematoma (the size of a football) that had become infected with a septicemia type infection (very similar to e-coli) that was now on a rampage. During the surgery (that lasted around four hours), they used a lavage to wash out the infected haematoma and I had a blood transfusion to replace the three litres of blood lost during surgery. They cut off all the dead skin and sort of started again. The next week was a real blur. I was on so many drugs, drains (collecting all my blood and goo), ventilators, injections (in my thighs, lures in veins I didn’t know existed, and when they failed, my bum became a pin cushion). The infection just didn’t shift for a long time. Every day was a round of surgeons, Doctors, nurses, specialists and I’m so grateful for every one of them. The main concern was that the infection would develop into Necrotizing Fasciitis, which given the wound span, would have killed me. Anyway, it didn’t – and I’m so glad to say that I’ve lived to post this! I was so comforted and amazed when David came in to tell me that he’d been in touch with Plu and kept her up to date with what had happened – and how she had relayed all the kind thoughts and get well wishes that had come through from you guys. One of the greatest memories I have, is of rooting through my handbag, finding Plu’s number, and wheeling me and my drains out into the corridor to call her! I’m afraid that by the time I got back to my room, I was a mess of tears and wobbles – so grateful for the support and kindness that you guys have all shown me during this time. I have to say, I just about peed myself logging in this afternoon and seeing me pic at every turn – yea Gods! :scared2: (feel free to take those down any time you fancy) :D. I’m still not 100% – but well and truly out of immediate danger (I bloody hope) :). I’m as weak as a kitten and it’s taken me a bloody age to type this. I need to get my blood count up more, and I’m on loads of pills and such. Plus, I get a home help nurse tomorrow to redress my wounds and stuff – yay!

The following are some things I learned which I thought I’d pass on.
1) Your Mum was right about clean knickers. There’s nothing like the face of a top surgeon as he’s trying to unpick your clothes – and then says “My God! Her knickers have disintegrated with the infection!” Admitting that you weren’t wearing any can be embarrassing. Always wear knickers.
2) Catheters rule. There’s nothing sweeter than not having to worry about getting up to pee. Not that I would have remembered or been bothered, but it was nice to know that the bladder was taken care of.
3) Breaking wind is considered (in some medical circles) as a miracle break through. I now rejoice in farting because I know that all me tubes are in the right place!
4) Never chew on thermometers. They just don’t like it.
5) The people that invented all those cool machines, could at least have changed the tune on the beeping. That’s just sodding annoying after ten days.
6) If you think you’re going to hospital for something minor, get a pedicure. I did (at the sister company that Plu and Magnolia and I went to when I was in NC). At least when you lean over to throw up or have that nice nursey turn you over, it’s cheering to catch site of a pink toenail :).
7) Do some hair removal – or they will do it for you. And no, it’s not the erotic experience that I thought it would be :(.

Most importantly, I’ve learned the power of friendship, prayer and good people. I honestly can’t convey to you all how much your thoughts and prayers have meant to me. You’re a fantastic bunch of folks – thank you so much :mercy:.

I'm so sick of bed :mercy:. I have the physical capacity of a ninety year old woman. My wound is good though, and the District Nurse came a visiting on Friday and redressed the wound. I thought of you Fred, and remembered how you used to do that. I was kind of hoping for a strapping lad such as yourself to come calling, but got `Jane' who was lovely and full of matronly advice. I do not think there is any hope of ever having any hair in the bikini region following her visit [whoooosh - yelp!]. One portion of the wound is still mankey, so I'm watching it like a hawk in case it turns (again). Still, I'm feeling really positive and all your thoughts and prayers are working wonders!

Here are a couple of shots - one when I was in hospital with one of my drains (the lighting is a bit crap on this one) and the other, more recent of part of the wound (you can't really see the yucky part though - which I'm sure you'll all be thankful for!) :).

I hope your boobies are ok, baby :laugh1:

Fred
11-20-04, 05:33 PM
Lot of bruising at the incision site my dear- damn! What about the "yucky' part- what color is the drainage- it is thick or thin? any odor? Are they irrigating it with anything now before they dress it? Over here- the newest thing is to irrigate wounds that are not infected with is straight normal saline. They have found that peroxide eats away new tissue. That drainage looks like pure blood. :saywhat:

Yeah- I use to do what the "District Nurse" does. I loved the job- without a doubt- the most satisfying job you can ever do. But the paperwork for insurance companies (MEDICARE over here) is the biggest pain in the ass and I had to give it up.

EAT PROTEIN- LOTS OF PROTEIN! (BTW- do you take any zinc? Zinc helps speed healing. After my boating accident, my Doctor had me on Zinc for 3 months and I healed really well.)

Honeygirl
11-21-04, 02:23 AM
Cool Fred - ! The yucky part is basically draining plasma and a bit of blood (now, but before it was mainly blood). Nice and thin and not gunking up too much. Yes, they're doing the same with the saline. During the second surgery, I had it flushed with 4 litres of saline, and dressing changes thereafter it was just pure saline, which worked (touch wood) wonders. The pic above is showing the full blood drainage (I got the drains removed while in hospital. I tell you what though, the left side where the main infection is, hurt like an absolute bastard getting those drains removed. I'm ashamed to admit that I actually had to bite my hand because as they were removing the drains, all the goo and gunk came out and the pain was frigging awful). Good advice with the zinc and protein - I'm doing lots of both :). At the moment, the weeping part is mainly nice, clear plasma with no odor. I'm checking the odor thing like a sniffer dog - believe me!

Reb - oddly (and no one has been able to answer me this), one boob had the worst bruising on it following the surgery...almost like a bite mark :scared2:. Still, that faded and with all the other crap, I ain't too worried about it! :).

Fred
11-21-04, 05:17 PM
serous drainage (clear-light yellow in color, thin, no odor) is GOOD! It may be pinkish tinged because of a bit of blood.

They may be packing the wound with dressings. That helps it heal from inside out. If it heals from outside in, you're in trouble. Sounds like you're on the road to recovery!

Honeygirl
11-22-04, 02:21 AM
Yea - I'm leaking the good stuff (*sounds of forks dropping throughout NC - sorry :( *). I had a dressing change today and she manually squeezed out a bit more while we talked about the weather and oysters. It's amazing what you find to talk about when you're all exposed'n'stuff :). My right side is great, my left is still being hateful - and the stitches pull a bit, which is all normal I guess. They've not done any packing, but I'm bandaged up good and proper! So far, it's all going good. Touch wood it continues :D.

I've avoided digging me finger in there for a looksee, but given the amount of digging the nurses and Doctors have been doing, I'd say around the depth of the cotton on a Q-Tip - maybe a smidgen deeper? Fred - I've gone and done something stupid and taken my morning pills (an absolute shit load) on an empty stomach. I've got antibiotics, pain pills, iron, blah, blah, blah floating around in there and I feel really sick. Should I heave them up or ride it out? I ate soon afterward, but not soon enough. David says to ride it out...have you (or anyone) got any suggestions? :(.

NO- don't go digging! LOL!

That's not too deep at all. I have had to dress wounds like that where you had to pack the wound and you actually stuck your whole hand all the way to the elbow inside the person's wound. (Granted- it was a bedsore on a 500 pound man.) :barf:

Lots of fluid, lots of protien and keep the dressing nice and dry and you'll be good as new before long.

Solarte, I couldn't fake any of this - including the massive wound and stitches...I know you were joking with that comment :).

HB - thanks lovey! When I was in the Hospital, they really watched the white cell count and I think because of the lupus they wondered if I was heading for an `episode' so they wanted to catch it early. Right now, I'm on loads of meds and I'm being watched carefully with blood tests etc to make sure that nothing slinks off the wrong way. Yea Gods, that would be the last thing that I need right now :(.
