To be honest, the conference is really down right now. Everybody saw how the NW4A (i.e Freedom and East Burke) fared last year in the playoffs, both Freedom and East Burke lost key parts to their team from last year but I think the coaches will get the best out of their players and be in the hunt for the conference title.

This may finally be the year that McDowell can win the conference. The Titans return a lot of people from last year but they're gonna have a difficult time replacing Stephen Whiteside at the point guard position. It's gonna be interesting to see if Kevin Johnson will be productive running the point. The word is that Justin Beam may be getting some time at the point. Speaking of Beam, he's our best shooter on the team, expect a lot of production from him this season reguardless of what position he plays.

East Burke 54
Hibriten 35

Football still going on so some key players from both teams didn't get to play.
East Burke had to play with 5 JV players on the team.

EB, I know what you are saying.

With all the success of the SCHS football team, South is going into Thursday's game with Hibriten without several key players. And

I know this board has typically focused on the girls side of the conference, but I think its going to be a exciting year for the guys. Remember, there was a 4-way tie for 4th place(last playoff spot) last year. It may not have been the most crisp basketball ever played but every game ment something to someone and everyone was scoreboard watching.

So, I purpose that I will keep everyone up with my little end of the conference as much as possible, if everyone else will do the same. Like I said the NW4A might not be pretty this year, but it should be fun to watch.

Hey the Rockets have started the season 2-0 with impressive wins both on the road. ACR defeated Asheville 93-66 on Tuesday, and handed Owen a 84-29 loss tonight (Thursday). The Rockets built a 50-6 halftime lead (yes that's right 50-6), tonight at Owen, and really cruised from there. Reynolds has done it with what I would say is DEFENSE. They press, and pressure the ball all night long, and cause lots of turnovers. They are a VERY deep team, and don't depend on any one player to carry them. Playing 11-13 players on a regular basis and ALL can score and play defense. Not a lot of size on the team, but with the new coach and a new attitude on this team, it's just nice to see the boys having fun and actually playing hard. I doubt they win the conference or anything of the sort, but at least this years version of the Rockets will go down fighting, unlike last year! :xyzthumbs

I do not have details, but an exciting game for the new coach at AC with them pulling out a one point win 58-57.

Good win for the Cougars.

The Spartans didn't fair as well. They lost at Hibriten by 20 or so. South Caldwell is obviously without the football players: Casey Justice, Joe Marchand, Louis Swaba, etc. South Caldwell didn't suit up a single senior last night and the lack of varsity on the court time showed.

The sophomores (which I think 6 of the 10 players were) got it together and played well, too bad the game wasn't in doubt at that point. But other good things for South is their JV team won by 30 without several of their players who were on varsity. South might just be loading up for a strong run over the next few years. And I think they are going exceed some expectations this year once they have everyone.

From what I understand almost all the good basketball players from owen are absent due to the football playoffs. This could explain their dismall showing against the rockets.

Actually only 3 were missing, and I am sure that would have made somewhat of a difference, however I doubt it would have made a 55 point difference as only 2 of them were starters according to assistant coach at Owen. I know you hate to see Reynolds improve, but they have improved greatly this year, and I am still sure they won't win the conference, however they will not be at the bottom of the league this year, and I am extremely confident they will get a playoff birth this year.

Not to mention their 6-9 Center who is going to Wake Forest failed to even score in the first half, and YES he did play the whole game.

I think you saying that you know I hate to see reynolds improve is a bit unfair. Yes I am a big McDowell fan but this is high school sports not the NBA. I like to see all young high school players do well. I have to admit I really felt sorry for the rockets this past football season. I know it had to hurt going from the best team in the nw4a that had never lost to a nw4a team to almost the worst team in the nw4a,saved only by my titans from being the worst. I was born in and grew up in Asheville. I lived there for the first 12 years of my life until I moved to Marion. When an Asheville team such as Reynolds plays McDowell I pull for the titans, other wise I always pull for the asheville area teams to do well. I wish all Reynolds teams good luck in the coming season.

I was only say you hate to see Reynolds improve because maybe we might make some noise in the conference. Not because you don't like us or anything. I know it's nothing personal. Oh yeah, our football team was better than Watauga AND McDowell so we finished 5th, not 6th!

I think I have seen everyone's non conference schedule except Watauga. (By the way, if it is posted somewhere, let me know.)

I truely believe South might have the toughest non-conference schedule and schedule going into christmas. West Caldwell twice, Fred T. Foard twice, I don't know what Burns has this year but South sees them twice and then East Burke before heading off to Christmas break.

What are the other NW4Aers looking at before the break?

I would rate McDowell's non-conference schedule as average. We do play East Rutherford and TC Roberson twice, but playing Enka and Mitchell twice offsets it. McDowell usually gets benefit from the Freedom Invitational playing in it, we always get at least one Charlotte school and another quality team out of that tourney.

We too have TC Roberson twice and also play Carolina Day which is a very good team typically. However, after that it's just not that strong, although Asheville is very athletic and Owen will be better when they get their two starters back from football (after this week I predict!), and we play both of those team twice. Other than that we have Enka once, Erwin twice, and Christ School. Overall not too tough a non-conference schedule, but that is a good thing, maybe this team can get some confidence heading into conference play. They have played REALLY well so far in two road wins against Asheville and Owen. We have Erwin coming up on Tuesday in our home opener.

Bigdan, correct me if I'm wrong but I believe East Rutherford only lost 2 regular season games last year and both losses were to McDowell.

Someone give me some information on Freedom. What do they have coming back this year. Are they the favorites this year to win the conference, if not who is? Also, have they played any scrimmages? How about the other teams Watauga, South Caldwell how did these teams do in their scrimmages, and early season games if they have played any. I saw were Alexander Central won a close game earlier, did the Cougars scrimmage anyone? If so did who and how did they do? Let me have some info on these other teams if anyone knows about them. Thanks.

Freedom lost a lot of people from last year. Chris Moore, Dwight Johnson and others gone to graduation. Stoney Polite and Gerald Probst transferred to West Caldwell. Freedom still has some good players, Aaron Bolds, Justin Mack, Stetson Johnson but I think this may be the year that the rest of the conference can catch up with Freedom.

I believe that's Julian Mack. Justin graduated 2 years ago..

But, Freedom has alot of size and may rival McDowell's big front line. Johnson, who stands 6'5" will also be joined by Tyrone Caldwell (6'3 1/2") and Channing Rutherford (6'5"). They are very tough to penetrate, but are equal to McDowell's line in the lack of varsity experience. Julian is just like his brother in that he can score and is the hardest working player on the team. Also, watch out for Clay Henson, he's got a smooth shot and is not afraid to take it to the basket.

Freedom won't win the conference, but they will be in the hunt for a playoff berth.

West Caldwell beat up on South Caldwell last night scoring 99 points. This could be the best teams West has ever had and maybe the best in the state in any class. They would beat an allstar team out of our conference

I wouldn't really lump Christ School in the same classification as Enka and Erwin as opponents that aren't all that tough. Christ School is ranked 14th Nationally by HoopsUSA that includes teams such as Oak Hill and Charlotte Latin. These are private schools that typically recruit and have teams that are loaded. Thus, I would say that ACR's non-conference schedule isn't as weak as one might think. BTW Christ School beat Carolina Day twice 108-65 & 66-47.

http://hoopsusa.com/frm_poll.cfm

On rival hoops David Weaver is ranked 103 and is listed at 6'10" 210lbs.

We play Owen again next week Wed. Dec. 8 and they should have any and all football players that play basketball in the mix. Hopefully they will have more than 6 players on their boys JV team this time.

I am going to be honest with you, I got Carolina Day and Christ School mixed up. I knew Christ School was the toughest of the two and I totally mixed them up. Even last year Christ School handed it to us, and Carolina Day struggled to beat us (by 3) and we really weren't all that good. My mistake for reversing those two. However, the Carolina Day game has now been cancelled due to Officials testing on Dec. 6, so we will not be playing Carolina Day, so the easier of the two is out of the mix.
