McDowell opened with Mitchell last week. Overall they are not quick, they do have some girls inside with bulk but McDowell's interior didn't have all that many problems. They don't have much of a perimeter game either. Usually I would say a 4A team should easily beat a 2A team, but I don't know all that much about Watauga, so it may be more competitive game.

Rockets led by 3 at half and by 2 with 1:30 left but couldn't hang on. Alex Thompson fouled out with 4 minutes left and the Rockets again needed her ball handling at the end when turnovers really hurt. All in all not a bad game though, even though both teams played again without their second leading scorers, Reynolds without Worley, and Asheville without Burgin. The Rockets looked ALOT better tonight then they have in the past few games, maybe they are beginning to get it together.

ACHS finally broke through with a much needed victory Tuesday night with a win over the Black Hawks at West Wilkes. The game started quick for the Cougars with fast breaks and a lot of steals in the mid court area that turned into a one sided affair. ACHS lead by at least 29 several times in the second half which gave them opportunity to work on their offensive play sets and allow some younger players to get some game time experience. They led by 11after one, 19 at the half and then finished with the 27 point victory. I did not get a chance to confirm any of the scoring with the team but I had the Cougars being led by their 3 senior captains Tekera Flowers with 12 and Kenya Miller and Miranda Horne with 10 each. It also looked like Miller had anywhere from 12-15 steals, though that is just from observation. I should get a copy of the game in the next day or so and will review for steals, boards and points because I think Miller had a double-double in points and steals along with Horne in points and rebounds.
While the Cougars got the chance to work on their struggling offense, they are still not hitting on all cylinders but this will give them something to build on in the next two days of practice as they get ready to go to Hickory to play the Lady Tornadoes Friday night and hopefully play a game closer to the real potential of this team.
West Wilkes has a very good outside game. Again I do not have names or numbers, but there were at least three of them that once they got warmed up in the second half hit 3 after 3 which helped since they could not get much going inside. Not sure who they will play this year but they will need to guard against the Black Hawks from lighting it up from the arch.
Congrats to the Cougars!

McDowell defeated TC Roberson 73-39. Really there was ugly play on both sides. McDowell shot horrible in the first half (less than 35 percent) but made up for it with a 53 percent effort in the 2nd half. Emily Lovik lead with 18 points, Leah Smith added 16. Aimee Kiser and Kelsea Greene both had 10 points. You could tell the Lady Titans were playing the back end of consecutive games in consecutive nights, they just were far from sharp when it comes to shooting, passing the ball and other things. Level of competition goes up some when they play Owen on Saturday, 3 pm.

McDowell beat Owen this afternoon by 18, I believe the score was 76-58. Anna Atkinson had 15 points, 10 rebounds, 9 asissts...one away from another triple-double. Basically it was a story of two really good and tall players (Corrine Groves and #23 from Owen) verses about 6 or 7 really good athletic players. Groves had 26 points and 13 rebounds. McDowell played a packed in zone the entire game and made Groves work for every basket she made. Owen started hot from outside but cooled off which gave McDowell the chance to run the floor and build their lead.

Here was my previous rundown of Owen and what I thought about them playing McDowell.....

"From what I saw from Owen, they do have a couple of big girls, one being Corrine Groves. We pressed them and they honestly handled it GREAT and actually scored off our press ALOT. I wish we had got out of the press earlier. They pass the ball well, and then get it to Corrine for the lay up or short jumper, and it really hurt us. When we didn't press them, they had a few more problems. I just think we fell in love with the press and didn't have a lot of success with it. Their half court game especially their outside game wasn't up to ours and that is why we beat them. I don't think they will really challenge McDowell, keep in mind we beat them up there, without our 2nd leading scorer (Worley). So I think McDowell will handle them when you factor in that McDowell is just better than ACR, they have the revenge factor, and they are playing at home. Really I see the Lady Titans winning by double digits.....15-20."

Looks like I hit it perfect! Congrats McDowell!

CFBall,

I heard on the radio leaving Marion today that the game at East, Tuesday, will start early, around 6:00 p.m. I don't know why? East was ranked in the first Sweet 16 (#8 I believe) and supposedly has a player being recruited. Well, they better be ready to go, or it will get ugly! McDowell has 5 starters who can put it in the basket, and a couple of nice subs, too. Keep them healthy! I will see you there if you go?

East Rutherford dosen't have JV girls, that is the reason why varisty action gets an early start. Boyce is the guard getting looks by some colleges. East Rutherford showed signs last year of becoming a better girls basketball program. This will be, by far, East Rutherford's toughest game yet coming on tuesday.

I think East Rutherford moved up in yesterday's updated Sweet 16. BTW, McDowell is now ranked #1, 5 of 6 voters at the Observer voted McDowell, the lone voter voted Victory Christian.

So much like the first game a week ago, Hickory just outplayed and outhustled ACHS Friday night, outscoring the Cougars 53-19 in the 2nd half to cruise to an 82-40 win at Hickory. Again, I do not think either game against HHS shows how well the Cougars have improved, but it looks as if time will tell this story. ACHS was led again by (unofficially) Kenya Miller with 15 and Tekera Flowers with 13. Hopefully the weekend will give a few of the Cougars a chance to get over some illnesses and get them ready for West Wilkes (Tuesday) and Mooresville (Friday) both at home this week.
