I have some thoughts on Owen. I was disappointed. I thought they would be much better. I guess they graduated both guards, and the 6'5" center from last year? I thought the coach would pop a vein. Corrinne Groves did her share, however.

Even so, their boys' team is embarrassing. To have 6'10" Weaver and not even use him is a joke. He should be at some prep school. Their coach seemed to have no clue. That school seems to have a problem with sportsmanship, including the football team when they came to Shelby. :nono:

I'm not including the girls' basketball team in the sportsmanship thing.

Well, there's my 2 cents worth. Anybody up there want to take issue? Somebody needs to take control!

I am under the assumption that this years team at Owen is basically the same girls from last year, except the 3rd tall girl which she transfered to a private school. Maybe Reynoldsrocks can verify that for me?

As far as Owen, I don't think I would consider it being disappointing. I really see it as being the difference between 2A and 4A basketball. I remember the powerhouse Mitchell teams from the 90's. As good as they were (multiple 2A championships), they beat McDowell very few times. This Owen squad has no excuse for not making it to at least the regionals. Corrine Groves was awesome, absolutely nobody in 2A classification should stop her. McDowell played that 2-3 zone the entire game, and didn't make it easy for her, but she still scored 26 and 13 boards. Wake Forest found them a true star.

Owen did lose one of their big girls to a transfer. Where she went I am not sure, I am also thinking they lost one of their guards to graduation. I am with you Bigdan about them, they will give the 2A teams fits this year. I know we played them when we weren't at full strength, but they gave us all we could handle. However, we refused to stop pressing them, and they just ate us up passing the ball to Groves for layups, until late in the game when we finally got them in a half court game. We have them again on Wednesday so it will be interesting to see if we press or not.

I also agree with the post about their boys team. We didn't face them when they had all their football players back, but Weaver didn't do anything against us. Actually he had 0 at halftime. They didn't use him at all (except to try to break our press) and why he was trying to bring the ball up I'll never know. Maybe it will be different Wednesday if their guards are back. It's not like we have ANY size to match up with him.

Oh well, good luck to the NW4A teams tonight and the rest of this week. Do the conference proud!

This McDowell/East Rutherford matchup is going to be more compeitive than in recent years. In the past, all McDowell had to do to win was to arrive in the gymnasium. Sorry to sound arrogant, but that was the truth. East showed signs last year of being a better team, mainly due to the fact that they have a new coach. Now, they got some good players to go along with the coaching change. The Lady Cavaliers went to the Bull City Classic down in Durham during Thanksgiving and beat a good 3A Durham Hillside and almost pulled off a major win against Victory Christian. All in all, even though McDowell should win with their depth and overall talent, it won't be one of those 50-60 point runaways from a couple years ago.

South Caldwell over Highland Tech by about 35 points tonight. SC has lost only once so far but has played a very weak schedual. I am afraid their nonconference schedual will not have them prepared for conference play.

I don't even think Hibriten has a JV girls team and they have like 10 freshmen on varsity -- not pretty.

Well, sports fans, the impossible almost happened tonight. McDowell squeaked by East Rutherford 44-41.

This seemed to be a combination of a much improved Cavalier team, and a case of McDowell looking apathetic and lethargic. You know, they seemed to have the "blues" for some reason. Of course, the 2 inside post players for East are about 5'11" & 250. They tend to get position.

I will patiently await this rematch to see if things are different. I believe I would press from the word "GO", as the lulling half-court game is not McDowell's strong suit. Either way, a win is a win. These kind just give the fans heart attacks!

Congrats to East for stepping up several levels from the past! :applause:

I pretty much agree with the analysis. The score was 40-34 East Rutherford with about 3 minutes to go. The McDowell 10-1 run was the difference between a scare and a major upset. But I also think East deserves major kudos for the effort and the gameplan. This was one of those nights for McDowell where you take the win, quickly get on the bus and haul tail out of town, SCARY MY FRIENDS!!! :scared2:

:laugh1: on the East side, whatcha think?? charger decorated clown next to the exit but i do agree.......pressure defense by the titans is their ticket with this team. those big gals had the touch, run the court well but it looked like the McDowell starters didnt have their A game tonite. the subs for them did well though............. not sure of their stats??? anna lean-in 3 pt play with one minute or so sealed it for the visitors!!

enjoy the game

Much like the game last week, the visiting Black Hawks could not match up to the size and on again off again quickness of the Cougars very well and fell by 45 in Taylorsville. There were some bright spots for the Cougars like a press that seemed to work for them at times but still needs some work for conference play along with some not so bright spots like missed lay ups and free throws that they will not be able to continue to do in NW4A action. There were many what I call silly fouls committed by ACHS mostly as a result of being over eager to steal passes for quick baskets, either running into the Black Hawk players or reaching in when solid defense would have been better. Sometimes being overly aggressive in a game that didn’t call for it made the play sloppy and frequented by whistles. If I remember correctly, neither team took a time out until the 4th quarter. That is not something you see much, but there were enough interruptions in play and free throws I guess to make up for it.
The Cougars were led by (unofficial, my count only) Tekera Flowers with 18, Keya Stewart with 15, Megan Huffman with 13, and both Kenya Miller and Miranda Horne with 10 each.
The Cougars are at home Friday night against Mooresville which is always a tough team and usually a physical non-conference game.

Yes, we pressed them again, and yes they beat us down low AGAIN! Oh well, like another post above said...a win is a win! Worley saw her first action of the year tonight, scoring I would guess 6-9 points. Not bad, but obviously not there yet. She did hit one three, and grabbed some boards, and really looked better on D then on O. She will be a welcome addition to this team.

TC Roberson 52

This looked more like the Lady Titans that I know and not the squad who played terrible last night. Lovik and Atkinson carried the load for McDowell. Don't have the stats but I would guess Lovik had 20 or more and Atkinson had about 15 with probably 6 assists. Akendra Brown probably had close to her average (9-10 points). Had the pleasure of sitting right above Rashanda McCants and her family tonight. :laugh1: They were at Roberson taking in the action.

Your right a win is a win and although owen didn't impress me that much at McDowell Saturday congradulations on your win. What happened in the boys game. I guess those owen football players that were absent in your first game did make a difference. Looking at the box score in the sorry sports section of your local paper the citizen-times it looks like owen controlled the game. I wish someone besides myself would call the asheville paper and complain about their sorry coverage of wnc basketball.

In the boys game, well we are going back to our old ways. Yeah, Weaver had his way against us, but we refused to play defense on the ball and pressure the guards. Offensively we shot poorly again, and of course couldn't rebound against Weaver so all in all it was the Weaver show. We thought we would show up and win and then got in a situation where the game was tight in the end (we were down 4 with 2:00 left) and our shots didn't fall and they pounded it inside to Weaver and Game Over.

weaver was a no show at McDowell. When someone told me he was a wake recruit I couldn't believe it. I guess he just had a bad game. The Titans might be in trouble when they go to Owen. I believe they are in trouble anyway. They have been blown out in their last 3 games and are unable to generate any offence at all. Looks like another year of getting worse as the season goes on.

Tony, there will be no return game at Owen. The game that was played last Saturday was an NCHSAA Endownment Game, no return games.

Let's give a big "shout out" to the folks in Holly Springs!

Enka did not bother to put up a fight tonight in Marion.

Coach removed the McDowell starters with over 3:00 to play in the 3rd quarter and the score 59-18.

Final score: McDowell 72 Enka 27.

Lovik got 20 again tonight (8 of 11), which I think puts her over 1,000 for her career. Atkinson only took 3 shots the entire game, hit 2 of the 3 for six points. But the big story is the assists, 12 more tonight for Anna. She's on pace to absolutely shatter the career record of 813, at this pace she may break it before the regular season ends.

I know that CF. There are some softballers on the team, namely, the pitcher (Banks) can be pretty good at times. They showed much better effort, enthusiasm, desire, etc. the first time around. There wasn't any fire there last night at all. Of course, McDowell did come out "red hot", and put the game away very early. Enka is not that bad of a team, not like last night.

GO LIONS, AND I GUESS CHARGERS, TOO!

South Caldwell defeated Burns last night. Not sure of the final score but I think it is was 65 to 29. I do know South's defense held Burns to only 7 points in the 2nd half while scoring over 40. The first half was very ugly for SC

From Friday night, the Lady Cougars won thier 3rd of the year over a smaller Mooresville team Friday in Taylorsville. Similar to the West Wilkes games, ACHS took control early with leads several times of 21 in the second half. The lack of inside size hurt Mooresville, who from what I remember the last few years have had some size but just must be one of those years for them. The Devils did shoot pretty well from outside and from the 3 point line, but it was not enough. The Cougars were led by their 3 senior captains Tekerra Flowers with 19 and Miranda Horne and Kenya Miller with 15 each.
The next game for ACHS will be at Wilkes Central on Wednesday the 15th and then opening the NW4A schedule at home Friday the 17th against McDowell.
