View Full Version : Artist you just don't get the appeal?

Lets take this a little further. I started with Eminem as a current artist I just don't understand the appeal. Who else is famous but you just don't get the mass appeal. I never liked Bob Dylan and he is widely considered a musical genius. I think he is a whiney bastard. Neil Diamond is another.

- Barbara Strisand (sp)

alice cooper, that isn't even music is it?

now Alice Cooper I understand. His following was more than his music. For the time he really pushed people a different way to think about music. "Shock Rock" is kind of like a horror movie on stage. Even if you don't like his music you just have to understand how diffrenent of an approach he had to music making. He made the way for band like Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, Rob Zombie and many other bands that like to shock you. And no matter what anybody else says "It's all just a show"..

A band I never understood the hype from was the Clash. I just am not a big fan of their style of punk.. Just can't ever get into them.

Man. I love Zappa. And the Clash. Damn guys.

System of a Down

I never thought they would make it big. They are too quirky, different, and heavy for the radio crowd to pick up on. However, I am now sick of the two releases off of Toxicity. I wanted them to be huge underground and be my band that no one else knows. But oh well...

actually, that's why I like what I do like of System.
Straight metal bores me to no end.
I adore Zappa.

Now there is a ground breaking group I like. These guys were SO much better than the Sex Pistols (IMO)

I'm sure I'll get drawn and quartered for this but here goes anyway

The Grateful Dead

I don't dislike them - just never could get into them - everyone says you need to see them live

well i did - in gboro around 1981 - all the Dead Heads were loving it - i still didn't.

They are awesome live. And he is just as scary. I love it when he sports the giant fro on his head. Seeing them at House of Blues will be far better than any arena tour.

Are they coming to house of blues? Which one? MB? Tell me when...

gutter

Oh I'm sorry. I meant when I saw them at the House of Blues will be better than any arena tour. That was a couple years ago. They are headlining Ozzfest right now. I hope they do another club tour after that.

OIC...sorry...blonde moment....I'm in MB a lot and was hoping to get to check them out. I'd just have to stand far enough away so I couldn't see the EYES!

great sound coming out of S.O.D.

they just played the oz fest in philly and i heard they were GREAT, i didn't go. i can't totally get into all the heavy metal sounds, but i enjoy them from afar.

i too must agree, i always thought i was to young to get into the DEAD scene, but even if i were older i still don't think they'd be my cup of tea lol. i think lots of people blindly jump on the coattails of who is popular at that moment. you know when your young you listen to what everyone else listens to. this is how so many bands get the large followings. there are LOTS of bands that sound great, but aren't flashy enough for the teens of that era. face it the weird stuff sells in the music industry. each new group seems to have a quirk about them that catches someones eye.

Nah, got nothing to do with how old you are. It's a cultish taste that you either have or don't. Hell, late 80s, early 90s was when they were the most popular.

I actually got into the dead after I got into Phish, who I still think were/are a more talented musically. I was kind of snotty about the dead until I got into college.

SOD seems to be prog-metal band, sort of a Rush meets Kiss (or Dream Theatre meets Gwar, for a modern context). Different. I like it.

Bands I never got:
Flock of Seagulls
Warrant/Poison
Goo Goo Dolls/Matchbox boring/Let’s all sound the same 4th rate grunge pop bands

Odds are if your band name is a series of letters and numbers you will be another boring clone. Kind of like people on this board.

I don't get Michael Jackson. He's a freak. He doesn't look human. He pays for his own tribute show and acts like everyone came becasue they love him. People cried at his show. It was tears of pity.

I get MJ. He's a self mutilation child molester who wants to look like Liza but ended up looking like Alien. What's not to get.

I never was much of a Deadhead, but I liked a few of their songs. Here's a good one - my favorite one actually:

The Dead (http://webpages.charter.net/silversurfer42/GratefulDeadMexicaliBlues.mp3)

The old obscure stuff is the best.

Most of the others named I really like. Bob Dylan I have every album he ever put out I think. I liked Alice Cooper. I never even saw a show, I liked the music. I thought the Clash rocked. I even like me some Neil Diamond every once in a while.

Rap - you can keep that shit. The only rap song I ever liked was Baby Got Back by Sir Mix a lot, and only because it had a video of chicks asses and was good for a laugh. All the rest of rap can go to hell in a handbasket for all I care.

I agree totally on the dead. I FUCKING HATE HIPPIES!!! You can have all of the jam music.

Here is another band I can't understand is Nirvana. I was into and still love this band. I just don't understand the reaction to them. Why Is Kurt Cobain worshiped?? I think Nirvana was a great band but nothing to level of what they are considered today.

agree totally. Same with the Doors. They put together some damn good music but this shit of Jim Morrison's gotta go. He wasn't a deity, he was just a brash asshole who got under various influences and did crazy shit. I guess if Peter Frampton had died when he was popular, we'd have the same thing there? I mean Jimi rocked, smoked, and put together more good music in four years than huge acts like U2 or Michael Jackson have in 20 + years, IMO. So I can get up on a little Jimi worship, because he was an innovator and sounded damn good. Otherwise, this self-inflicted early death after bouts of depression in your prime deal is starting to get old in Rock.

I have started liking that band too - my daughter wanted me to download some songs and I liked everyone of them - didn't know they were considered a Christian group - if thats true then that is my kind of church music!

Except, his prime was over. Morrison was pretty much done with the Doors, and making music, and the Doors were done with him. So other than a crappy solo album or two, we didn't miss much IMO. With him, I think the attraction is that he burned out instead of fading away, to paraphrase Young.

Whereas with Cobian and Hendrix, there was still some creative forces working there.

"I agree totally on the dead. I FUCKING HATE HIPPIES!!! You can have all of the jam music."

Hippies were just naive/dumb young adults; hating them would be like cruelty to dumb animals.
:)

Some damn good points Mag. The damn good music/Doors is debatable:), but I totally agree with this deity shit and Jimi's music. Now, Jimi rocked/swung!:)
