comes around. I admit I deserve it all after conspiring to trick Joy at work. I have been in a little medical drama of my own.

On the 1st I had a follow-up appt. to have my liver function test. My enzymes have been elevated for the last year and the Dr. has been testing me every 3 months. Anyway, I tested but good this time! AST - 160, ALT - 305, ALP - 306...Bili was normal and Alb was normal. Ultrasound was inconclusive  .

Anyway, the working diagnosis is PBC - Primary Biliary Cholang....something or other. I'm not sure. I have a few other symptoms that the Doc thinks are related - hypothyroid... :blah: They still haven't done a biopsy so I'm not 100% sold. Doc has taken me off everything including my Centrum vitamins! I CAN take Claritin D as a last resort when allergies flare. Other than that, I can't take any meds and I have to eat less protein.

Fun stuff. But hey, it is all good! Mentally, I feel better than I have in a few years. :satana: I started tanning today and my son and I are walking every evening. Ben has been having good days. My daughter turned 17 Monday.

It just doesn't get much better. :trophy:

wow, sista.

medical stuff can be a bummer -- we're still goign through the weirdest medical spell we've ever had. my being sick, ty being sick, my toe...

how much medicine were you taking? is that why you think you feel better (ie: more clear)? or is it the food?

glad you're ok.

I hope you guys are getting better!

I don't take too many meds. Thyroid, vitamins daily. Tramadol few times weekly and sometimes sudafed.

I'm just feeling positive right now. Spingtime maybe...?! I love this time of year. I get tired most days and I have been dealing with hoarseness every day...Ben seems grateful! (I have GERD and it causes hoarseness.) But all in all, I'm feeling pretty good.

Don't go hating me girl for saying this. The tanner... babe, it can't be happening until we figure out what is wrong with your liver.
You could be elevated due to tylenol. Did you take it every day or every few days for the last couple of years? There are a lot of things that can get your liver out of whack and I used to do needle biopsies on them, it isn't that bad. You don't need to be in the tanner just yet though, please.

Ok. That is one I haven't heard. My daughter and I just signed up today on a whim. I never even gave it one thought except how good the heat feels on my old bones. :woot:

Tylenol? Rarely. Back in December AST was 112 and ALT was 160 - this has been steadily climbing over the last 6 months or so. I was tested again on Tuesday and I'll test again the 26th. He has me on every two weeks. Doc. wants to do the biopsy after the 28th. Oh and this is a Gastro I was referred to, not my Primary Care.

I guess todays tanners are a lot less harmful than the ones in the 80's and 90's and I am sure you use it responsibly. I knew a girl who got liver damage back in the day from the tanner but she was abusing it. Might be something to ask about, but in retrospect, I'm sure you aren't the abusing type. I shoulda kept my big mouth shut. :woohoo:

Maybe I missed something Lainey, but why are your liver enzynes elevated?

I'm sorry you're going through this Lainey - best of luck with the tests and treatment. Just a note on sunbeds...they have improved greatly in the last 10 years or so and despite having lupus (and therefore must avoid the sun), I have found the benefits (in total moderation) really useful for total relaxation, mood elevation, wound healing, and for a manky bit of psoriosis I have on my elbows. Honest to God, fifteen minutes on a sunbed - and I feel bloody marvellous!

I just wish I had the fifteen minutes to do it now .

You didn't miss a thing. The Dr. is trying to figure that out as well. No confirmation on the elevation as yet. I'm still going through tests. He is leaning toward an autoimmune diease...still ruling things out.

wow. my sil went (i guess still is) through this with her liver. she turned jaundice and had a bit of a struggle getting the right meds. she could not take a single otc medicine or herbs. she still has to be pretty strict about what goes into her body. she's much better now, though. :woohoo:

:mushy:HG:mushy: i'm with you on the 15 minutes in a tanning bed. i feel so much better afterwards. i started going because i can't sit in the sun and sweat. i just started going last year and have gone twice this year. got my basecoat. :) the trick is not to get fanatical about it.

Isn't it divine? :mushy:. I take everything off, oil up and hop in. I always feel like a pig on a spit, but damn it feels wonderful. I wish I had time to do it before I come over. I've got legs like milk bottles at the moment *sob*.

Thanks Honey, muff and Village. I appreciate your posts.

Referring back to muff's post, I was surprised when my GI asked me if I was taking any herbs. I did not know that herbs could be such an antagonist to the liver. I was taking Co Q-10 and L-Carnitine with a side of B-12. I had to stop those immediately. He explained about stuff breaking down in the liver and/or the kidneys.

Tanned today and did 30 minutes cardio...I rock. :waving:

you said the CT was inconclusive, have they said anything about stones in the bile duct?

Gallbladder out in '95. ERCP revealed no stones. There was a muscle, or something (ERCP was done over a year ago) that was constricting in some fashion, they cut it. This procedure gave me the worst case of pancreatitis.

Fred,

An update, if you don't mind reading it. Disclaimer: I am not a doctor so I can't spell all the cool words.

Blood test results reveal that I am anemic. Put me on Hemocyte.

IGA and IGM are low or virtually non-existant. Since the IGA can affect the gastrointestinal tract, am having an endoscopy and colonoscopy. They are doing a liver biopsy too since the enzymes are still elevated. Also, sending me to Wake Forest to see an Immunologist.(My brain is hurting to to figure out all these words...)

I know very little about what I just typed. Ben had to help me remember some of what was said today.

I just now saw this.

I have no real insight to the IGA and IGM levels and their norms. When are they doing the biopsy and scopes?

Were your enzynes still elevated after the drug-free holiday?
