Are they worth buying? Any tips on a particular kind that might or might not suck- literally? I just need it for the garage, car and around the house, nothing heavy duty. Any advice?

I use mine all the time for remodel stuff. I've got the Shop Vac brand and it really sucks good.

Shop vacs rule. I forget which kind I have, maybe a Ridgid from Lowes or something? I don't know, but itdetaches to double as a leaf blower and has been good so far. Have an appliance or plumbing leak in the house and you'll really appreciate that thing.

Yeah, I forget which I have. It works, though.

Thanks all -now the real question....should I spend the 130-150 or will a simple 50-60 dollar one do?

Ok so why the 100 dollar one as opposed to say 70? Is it because it has more horse power or tank capacity or are there just more attachments etc... with that one? I just want to make sure I'm not spending another 30 dollars when all I really wanna do is suck up broken glass and vacuum my car with it.

You are over thinking this. It's simple, if you were thinking about a 70 vs a 150 dollar machine then just split the differance and get the most popular model.

One more thing, Plu -- get a vac from somewhere that carries filters and such for the model you're buying. I was given a shop vac I loved, and used it a lot but I could never find replacement parts for it.
