Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Tour. When he Really could rock the house.
I was 13. My brother had mono and couldn't go.
Tickets were $7. Greensboro had festival seating then which meant first come first served. Top level was blocked off from floor level. People used to hook belts together and climb and/or fall and/or jump to get down to the floor.
The whole placed reeked of reefer.
The good old days of the classic rock and roll concert.
Damn a head rush of memories!

Other than the symphony in grade school, the first concert I went to was Heatwave (Always and Forever)... An up and coming hip band - Cameo was the introductory band... I'll never forget, I think it was around 1979 or so... Me and my girl made out the entire extended remix of always and forever... and "Cameo" rocked..
Soon after, I enjoyed live cover bands like "Molley Hatchet" "The Voltage Brothers" and others...
Dwight Yoakam. First concert I wanted to go to? B. B. King. Seen him thrice now. Best? The Mavericks at the end of their tour at Spirit Square (you don't often hear pop or country groups get into improv), or catching Coltrane's kid in an abandoned church.

Wow Magnus, I've been meaning to see Dwight, and I'm gonna have to make sure I do next time he's around. I bet the Mavericks whipped ass too. Willie is in G'boro in April.
They really did. I always liked their style, I like some country variations a lot more than most straight country. I want to catch Willie or Johnny Cash once while I can...or rather, while they can.
Def Leppard baby. It was the first sell-out in the "new" Charlotte Coliseum. It was sometime in October of 1988 during the "Hysteria" tour. They had an awesome drum solo which thanks to "Behind the Music" I learned the lead players (i.e. all members with two arms) were banging groupies heh. Queensryche opened the show, albeit before their "Silent Lucidety" single. Awesome show :)

Lallapallooza, the original. Siouxsie Souix and the banshees, Ministry, Ice-T, Henry Rollins Band, and a few others....
I remember so well the smell of pot and spilled beer. Ministry only agreed to do the tour if they could get the first night spot during the show. When the lights went down, and ministry opened with New World Order, pizza boxes, beer cups, trash of all kinds hit the air. It was like watching a tornado form from the inside out. 5 bonfires were started on the grass knoll at Raleigh's Walnut Creek Amphitheatre. I was naive and thought I'd try my hand at moshing. My first true bloody nose. I was in heaven.

Oh yeah.. my first concert was Skeeter Davis. Anybody remember her. My first rock concert was White Heat at my high skool. This band later became hair metal band Firehouse. My first real arena show was Motley Crue on the Dr. Feelgood tour. I was absolutely blown away. Until i saw the band............Metallica. I got my head busted open by a beer bottle but I was not about to leave so I just stayed there with blood running down the back of my head. Cool, just like a rock show should be.

Hey, Piper! Remember those shows in the Old Coliseum? General Admission? I remember getting to the Ozzy show at 4 (got out of school at 3:15). Standing in line for hours. The door would open and it was a mad rush!
Sorry, grew up in Tennessee. Freedom Hall (immortalized by Aerosmith's Rag Doll Video)
Same concept though. Generally admission, big rush, like the begging of the WALL.

Wow - My first one was in the same place, except the year before, 1973. I had just turned 14. $5.50 for Grand Funk Railroad I already had my own bag of pot. Smoked 3 or 4 joints and then had parents pick us up afterwards.
Yeah those were the good old days. Now I don't even bother with concerts. The only way I would go to one is if I could get tickets in the first 10 rows so I could really SEE the band. What fun are live concerts without smoking reefer?
The first was the biggest. Dec. 1969 the second concert after Woodstock. Palm Beach International Rock Festival. Three days, twenty dollars.
Iron Butterfly led off. I can't name everybody but I remember Janis Joplin, Sly and the family Stone, Steppenwolf, Johny Winters, Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds, Country Joe, King Crimson and the last Band was the Stones.
not to bad for twenty bucks... L O L

You left out Santana and Grand Funk
You neglected to tell the kiddies that although the concert only cost 20 bucks gas was 30cents a gallon and most of us were taking home about 50bucks a week.
Did you go VOR,how small a world would that be. There were over 80,000 as I remember. The guy who owned the drag strip and property also had a used car dealership in Lake Worth. Somebody (probably sheriff Bill Heightman) torched it during the festival. He also filmed a guy that had overdosed until he died. He also didn't allow firewood to be brought in on Sat. night when it got cold. The owner of the dragway told us to burn the bleachers.
It really was Easy Rider back in the day folks.

The first "concert" that I heard was actually at the Main NCO Club here at Fort Bragg. It was Stan Kenton in 1960 [None of you probably have heard of him(?)]. It was supposed to be a dance, but most everyone chose to listen.
The 1st and most enjoyable concert, per se, that I attended was
Count Basie in 1961 at ECU.

Grand Funk, December 1973, Cumberland County Arena, Fayetteville, NC, on their "We're An American Band" tour. Opening band was the Edgar Winter Group, who were riding high about that time with "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride". Festival seating or standing as we were on the floor about 50 feet from the stage. Lots of babes, lots of bumping and rubbing, great time.

I saw Bon Jovi with Blue Murder on the Bad Medicine tour, right after New Jersey came out. I got the tickets as a birthday present. Still today one of the best shows I've ever seen, JBJ rose out of the stage in a cloud of smoke and lazer lights. It's the only arena rock show I've ever seen. Next closest was Blink-182, coming on stage with "FUCK" on fire as they played. One of the most classic sets I have ever seen, I have never seen so many people get pissed off, they were worse than the BHG as far as crowd response. At one point they mixed up Jesse Helms and Jesse Jackson, I could have sworn I heard parents fainting.

When Keith Emerson and Greg Lake got back together, Carl Palmer was drumming with Asia, so they recruited Cozy Powell (who also played with Jeff Beck, Rainbow, Sabbath and many more). I thought it was later than 1982 though.

I think it was a 2 day Woodstock wannabee thing I remember it well. I got to go, I was 15 at the time. It was called the August Jam, put on by BigWays radio 610 AM, anyone remember them? Former DJ and now actor Jay Thomas was the man on that station. They also put on some smaller concerts in the years prior to the Jam. They were called the "BWB" (Big Ways Birthday Bash) or something like that. The one at the Charlotte Coliseum (old one on Independence) with Billy Preston, Alice Cooper, John Sebastian (formerly of Lovin Spoonful) and others was my very first concert as a teen. I would'nt trade those days for anything.

Uh, I think that might have been 1986, which means I may have seen The Hollies on a reunion tour at Carowinds in '84. The Spongetones opened.
I don't count the very numerous gospel shows in the Ashbrook auditorium that I had to go to 'cause my dad was the auditorium manager.

first "real" concert I went to see was aerosmith, but it was lame.
Most memorable has to be Slipknot, Machinehead, Coal Chamber, and someone else at Ground Zero in Spartanburg.
This was right as Slipknot was emerging and MH was promoting a new album, headlining. I had 3 or 4 cuts/lacerations by the end of the show and had trouble walking for a week from getting an ass whoopin in the pit. What a show.
Pantera at the Omni in Atlanta shortly followed that. Chairs were getting ripped out of the concrete bleachers/stands/whatever and tossed down in the the massive circle pit on the floor in front of the stage.
It's hard to beat either of those shows with what's around these days....

August Jam in 1974...!The August Jam @ the Charlotte (NC) Motor Speedway was also my first concert... and boy was it a doozy! I was 16 and my female guest was only 13 or 14 (?) - all I remember about her was that she was from Detroit (visiting relatives in NC), and she was gorgeous ... and the Speedway Jam was no place for a couple of young teens!!! Groups included: The Allman Brothers; Emerson Lake & Palmer; Black Oak Arkansas; Eagles; Foghat (the band that truly attracted me to the Jam); Marshall Tucker; Ozark Mtn DareDevils; Grinder's Switch; and many more! I think Wolfman Jack was the MC??? I've heard reports of as few as 150K up to nearly 350K rock fans were there @ some point during the weekend rock fest.

No, I'm wrong. The Jam wasn't my 1st. I've just had a flashback... I attended a concert @ App State (Boone, NC). It was also a weekend event. I don't remember the date... but a bus load (literally) of rockers rode up there together. I do remember the bus getting pulled over by a state trooper 'cause trash was flying out of the bus windows. It was a wild ride to ASU, and the concert is only a blurrrrrrrrrrr. I don't have a clue who was there, but now I have another topic to research... I'll figure it out and get a post on here...
