ok, the wife and i are considering selling our home in town and buying a place in the country. its has a little over an acre, a small brick house, 2br/1ba. (approx. 1050 sq. ft.) w/full basement and a pool. but the interior is in bad shape. the good - all hardwood floors, vinyl windows. the bad - the house is divided up into small rooms and we would like a more open floor plan, the stairway into the basement needs to be reconfigured but functional, waterproofing in basement will be needed because we want to put a bedroom/living space down there and the house has been neglected as far as cleaning and general maint. the yard is killer with pecan, apple, oak and weeping willow trees and is totally fenced in w/ very wide concrete drive. we need to find a reputable contractor who can both advise us with some design ideas and do the work. thats what i would like. we talked to an architect this afternoon but he wasnt much help. can anybody refer a decent contractor and/or clue me in with your past experiences with such an undertaking?
