The fucking A/C crapped out on us yesterday. It's blowing air, and the air is mildly cool, cooler than the ambient temp, but not cold, as it should be.
Im wondering if the refrigerant just needs a recharge or if this is a sign of worse things to come so I can take care of it now.

Dude, I'd let it go for now. Why spend the cash when it's effin' gorgeous outside.

is your condenser running? what's the temp out there? if it's really hot, you might just be exceeding the a/c's delta (how much colder it can make the air). you might try cleaning off your coils with a hose. let them dry before starting it up again, or you could freeze over the things and then they really don't work very well. if it's humid, you might check to see that they haven't frozen, for that matter -- tho that would be a more temporary problem.
i just bought an ac unit for my garage refurbishment. $350 for a ductless split system (condenser is on the outside of the garage on a slab and the cooler is on the inside hanging on the wall). it's a great unit, but the bad news is that it looks like i'll need to spend $200 to have it installed and charged. unlike a window unit you just plug in... oh well. it's still a nicer unit.

Probably both. If it needs coolant then it leaked out. If it leaked out, it will leak out again. How old is the unit? Probably best to go ahead and buy a new one unless you are moving soon.
Also, check your air filter. It may need changing. It may not help your problem but it is the cheapest way to start trying.
Have you checked the batteries?

How old is the unit?good question. most units last about 10-15 yrs. max. then you will be better off replacing them instead of throwing money at it. i know it sucks, i just spent 5K on a new gas pack in march and now the wife want to sell the house. some beach.

Thanks for all the good replies guys.
Our electric bill (and power usage was up 20% over this month last year (August) at $197. That was also about a 60% hike above July.
The thing runs continuously, and I believe Fred may have the closest answer, as it may be the thermostat.

The new units are also more energy efficient.

Installed new digital thermostat.
Wasn't it. Looks like we're going to have to spend some real money here.
Oh, and all the windows and doors ARE open.

When the air conditioner starts does the fan on the outside unit come on? I had a problem with mine this summer and it was a switch on the outside unit that was bad. Between $200 and $300 including labor and everything. I don't think the thermostat would be the problem, it either blows cold air or not, doesn't control how cold the air is. If the switch is not kicking the compressor on, it won't cool.
