    I believe that all players salaries become guaranteed for the season if on the roster in week one. However, younger players (rookies and second year guys typically, but not always) have 'split' salaries that allows the team to pay the player less money if they are cut or go on IR.

    there could be something to this though. if a player is signed after the season starts, they are (in most cases) on a week to week guarantee.

    Yeah it's pretty common for teams to 'stash' a few guys to avoid guaranteeing their salary, 3rd QBs that can't be on practice squads are pretty common victims
