Famed chef Paul Prudhomme died Thursday morning at the age of 75 in New Orleans after a brief illness.

The celebrity chef specialized in Creole cooking. In addition to K-Paul's, located in New Orleans' French Quarter, he previously owned and operated several other restaurants.

Over the years, he also developed several culinary products, including seasoning mixes and a hot sauce. He also has written several cookbooks, including "Paul Prudhomme's Louisiana Kitchen," which was awarded the Culinary Classic Book Award in 1989 by the International Association of Culinary Professionals. Other recipe books include "Chef Paul Prudhomme's Fork in the Road," "Chef Paul Prudhomme's Louisiana Cajun Magic" and "Chef Paul Prudhomme's Fiery Foods That I Love."

In addition to writing cookbooks, he made five seasons of television cooking shows for the Public Broadcasting Service's New Orleans affiliate, including "Kitchen Expedition," "Louisiana Kitchen" and "Always Cooking."

Prudhomme has been credited with popularizing Cajun cooking, including blackened redfish, one of his signature dishes.

He was born July 13, 1940, in Opelousas, Louisiana.

Prudhomme is survived by his wife, Lori. He was preceded in death by his second wife, Kay, who died in 1993.
