Surgery to keep Woods from defending Wachovia title

Tiger Woods had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Tuesday and will be sidelined four to six weeks, meaning he will not be able to defend his title in the Wachovia Championship in two weeks at the Quail Hollow Club.

Woods, who finished second in the Masters on Sunday, had the procedure performed by Dr. Thomas Rosenberg at the Healthsouth Surgery Center in Park City, Utah.

It is the third surgery Woods has had on his left knee. The first was done to remove a benign tumor in 1994 and an arthroscopic procedure was performed in 2002.

"I made the decision to deal with the pain and schedule the surgery after the Masters," Woods said in a statement on his Web site. "The upside is that I have been through this process before and know how to handle it. I look forward to working through the rehabilitation process and getting back to work as quickly as possible."

The timing also means Woods likely will miss The Players Championship, which follows the Wachovia Championship. He should be ready for the U.S. Open in June.

"We're disappointed he's not coming, but it's something he has to do," said Kym Hougham, executive director of the Wachovia Championship. "It's unfortunate but we understand. We wish him well."

Despite the absence of the world's No. 1 player, the Wachovia Championship will still feature many of the game's top players. Phil Mickelson, Masters champion Trevor Immelman, Jim Furyk, Sergio Garcia and Angel Cabrera are among the players expected to participate.

Tickets are already bought so the Wachovia won't suffer too bad other than concessions and such. Just means I'll be able to walk up and buy a ticket cheaper on Tuesday and Sunday
