I've read that Canales is going to tailor his scheme to the players' strengths. If that's true and actually happens, and if Joe Gilbert is worth a damn, then we should be set at OL and all we will need is a little depth for insurance. At Wide Receiver, OTOH, all we have right now is Thielen, Mingo, and Marshall Jr. Normally a GM likes to fill out the depth chart before the draft so he can take the BPA, but with Burns getting tagged I don't know how we are going to do that with our cap space.

Morgan better hope there's not a run on receivers in the first round. We need one badly.

Canales is spitting some good lyrics about the QB's role in pass protection and the run/pass relationship. I need to see it in action before I buy in, and even then, you'd still have to contend with the violate gremlin upstairs who could halt progress at a moment's notice, but it sounds like he's correctly diagnosed the issues of 2023.

I hope that's true, because coaches at ALL levels are notoriously stuck in this or that scheme.

At the HS level, one can't expect sustained success with that mind set...because you don't pick your players.

At the college and pro level, you do...but still, those players have strengths and weaknesses.

Would Ray Davis have the mass to be successful in a power run game behind the Panthers' OL?

I would be kind of happy with this draft:

    upload_2024-3-13_16-42-47.png

I traded down a couple of times to get more and better picks. First, I traded 39 and 141 to the Raiders for 44 and 77. Then I traded 44 to Cincinnati for 49and 194.

I don't think Tampa will drop down that far, and neither will Sanders or Eichenberg. I'm pretty confident that at least one of those receivers will be productive in the NFL, and won't be surprised if both hit.

https://www.nfldraftbuzz.com has a decent simulator. In this one, I made one trade, sending 101 to Minnesota for 108, 188, and 230. I think Robinson was too big a value to pass up, and there were still several good receivers available.

There's a concept, imagine that. Adapting to what the players you have strengths.
